Supreme Court weighs case of Christian group that bars gays

James Vicini WASHINGTON

The Supreme Court considered on Monday whether a university can legally deny recognition to a Christian student group that excludes gays and nonbelievers.

The high court appeared sharply split as it heard arguments in a case that pits anti-discrimination principles against religious freedom. The case could have important implications for how public universities, colleges and schools must accommodate campus religious groups.

Liberal justices asked whether campus groups could legally exclude women, minorities or those with disabilities while conservatives asked how far universities could go to require that groups admit student members with opposing views.

Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia asked whether a campus Republican club must admit Democrats or whether a Christian group must allow atheists to join and even conduct Bible classes.

2. Someone needs to ask Scalia if Christians should bar Christians
Phrased that way, it would probably shut him up.

Then again, maybe not. It's not like the man ever considers the hard questions, he just goes from a poisoned gut.

3. Point to me where Jesus asked his followers to exclude gays.
Not the any of the Old Testament, or Leviticus, the actual teachings of Jesus, the words out of his mouth, you know, where he proclaimed the Old Law as dead and gave them two new ones, "Love God, love thy neighbor."

If they are actually Christians, they can't do this.

4. Isn't it their point to convert them?
You'd think they would be happy to have gay and lesbian students exploring membership in their club.

7. You're right! ha ha
Have you ever heard those Christians that say, "Nobody's perfect. Church is for sinners cause we all are sinners." Except they want to exclude gay people cause I guess they think that sin is worse than others?

I wonder what their reasoning is for banning gays from the group? Because they sin? Are all sinners banned or just the ones they choose? Especially in a college, I'm sure they do their share of sinning.

5. IMO, it's never a good thing when this Court takes a case like this.
Doing the decent thing would require this Court to rule against Christians AND for gays, a double whammy.

And the frailest Justice on this Court is a liberal--the most liberal Justice left on the Court after Stevens retires.

Damn it.

6. Gee I wonder how THIS court will rule on that one
I thought this started out as the U wanting to withhold taxpayer funds from a bigoted group.
