Airline passenger taken off plane; called 'security risk'

Source: Associated Press

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A man on a flight from West Africa to New York City was removed from the plane and detained Thursday after authorities apparently added him to a "no-fly" list during the trip.

Customs and Border Protection agents detained the man while the Delta Air Lines jet stopped to refuel in San Juan after an overnight trip from Dakar, Senegal. The flight originated in Nigeria, the native country of a man accused of boarding a Detroit-bound airplane from Amsterdam in December with a bomb hidden in his underwear.

The man detained in Puerto Rico was not charged with a crime. Customs and Border Protection described him only as a "potential person of interest," who was removed from the flight for questioning.

But passengers said the plane's captain announced over the intercom — after the man was escorted from the plane — that the man had been added to a roster of people banned from travel to the United States while the plane was in flight.

... The man, a citizen of Gambia, was not on the no-fly list when he boarded the aircraft, said a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

1. We don't deserve to live in FEAR of being put on SOME inane list.
The American People SHOULD demand that the patriot act be repealed. It just is not right that people can be snatched up off the street ... and sometimes, American Citizens can be taken away and held without charges indefinitely.

OMG, I thought this was The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave?

9. A question that must be asked...
I am not looking for a flame throwing fight so let us please not go there...If we do not want to have a no-fly list then what...

How do you suggest we keep known terrorist and suspected terrorist off flights?

Should we just open the doors to all and deal with what ever may happen after it happens?

10. we managed for decades without one by treating "terrorism" as a criminal act
that is: If someone has committed a criminal act deemed to be "terrorist" in nature, then that person has a warrant placed for their arrest.

If they have committed no crime, they cannot be labeled a "terrorist."

It's a Rule of Law thing that has worked just fine. The "no-fly" list is political tool to harass the general populace and indoctrinate them into accepting the Corporate Police State. It does nothing to deter criminal acts.

13. I seriously doubt you would...
adopt that policy if it were in your hands to see to it no more planes are high jacked or blown out the sky. I know it is cool to say what you did but in reality it is not what you would do if it were up to you to protect Americans.

I totally agree we live in a police state here at home and many things need to be changed! However, to simply allow anyone and everyone to board American Planes is not thinking things through at all.

We survived for decades until 2001...Then Bush fucked everything up and really pissed off the Muslim world.

The no-fly list is not perfect by any means but it is basic common sense. And I am sure if you had the responsibility you would save lives just like Obama with a no-fly list.

8. They should have just gagged him and shackled him to his seat
That would have taken care of any potential risk.
