Belgium's Catholic bishop of Bruges quits over abuse
Source: BBC

The bishop of the Belgian city of Bruges, Roger Vangheluwe, has resigned after admitting sexual abuse of a boy earlier in his career.

Bishop Vangheluwe, 73, said the abuse had happened when he was a simple priest and continued when he started as a bishop, a Vatican statement said.

...snip...

Bishop Vangheluwe added that he was "enormously sorry" and that he had repeatedly asked for forgiveness. He had been bishop of Bruges since 1984.

These crimes took place in the 1980's or earlier, so he could have resigned last week, last month, or 10 years ago. He seems to have only decided to repent when the heat was getting uncomfortable.

RESIGNATIONS THIS WEEK
Bishop Roger Vangheluwe of Bruges, Belgium - accepted
Bishop James Moriarty of Kildare, Ireland - accepted
Bishop Walter Mixa of Augsburg, Germany - offered

24. I highly recommend that you google Anne Burke,
an Illinois Supreme Court Judge.

She chaired a commission that studied Church abuse a decade ago. (Her predecessor was so pissed at Church stonewalling and lies, that he went public, saying that the Church was not to be trusted.) Her findings sent her to the Vatican, where she dealt with the rat himself. She said some very interesting things yesterday and the day before. I'll get a cite and put it up here.

2. did the whole thing in the US take down any bishops or cardinals?
I can't remember. My fuzzy recollection is that there none.
Hasn't Europe already claimed a couple bishops?

13. OK....
...how does this guy LOOK like a pervert (other than the cleric collar - LOL)?

What can you read from this expression? Seriously....I could give you 20 photos of people with 5 being pedophiles and I doubt you could tell from a picture.

If you did not know he was an asshole - you could not tell from his picture.

9. Nobody but the Pope...
Archbishops are Bishops with larger jurisdictions. Cardinals have additional responsibilities but are not higher in the hierarchical structure (think Cabinet Minister)

Do these guys have great gold costumes or what? Clearly they are the embodiment of Christ's teaching on poverty - not to mention His teaching on the treatment of children.

His next stop is Prison?

Or is it enough to be publicly humiliated now for child sexual abuse?

16. And from whom exactly has he "repeatedly asked for forgivenness?"
Did he send a tear-stained note to his victim?
Disgusting. This kind of abuse is awful enough...to think that he and his fellow criminals have been sheltered by the church is...well...I won't waste your time with a rant.

17. This story really sucks...All roads lead right to the Pope..
He knew all for many years. He was in charge for many years. He transferred, covered up, lied, hid them for many years. It is so obvious.
He is acting exactly the way a true crook would act. Blaming Others, the media, unfair interpertation by those who do not know, back to blaming others, then all of us are to blame. over and over again....
You know, if your wrong, you fess up, say you are sorry, quit, pay the price, and move on...but...

People like Bush, Nixon, and this Pope, well they are above the law.
So they have other rules..Screw them..Let them feel the pain that they have inflicted on others. This guy could have changed things the week or month he got in charge..So he waits till now. He sucks and I hope he rots in hell for all the pain that he could have prevented or shortened.

20. They have three coagulated drops of Christ's blood in Bruge,
and this scumbag has handled them with the same hands he used to molest children. Does it get more twisted?

21. Not catholic, but went to mass there to see the relic

I agree, it is outstanding that someone who was responsible for such a symbol, real or not, could be so far off the mark.
