Passenger held after trying to open plane’s door
Source: msnbc

A Delta Air Lines flight from Los Angeles to Florida was diverted to Albuquerque early Friday after a passenger sprayed the first-class cabin with a water bottle, tried to open a cabin door and threatened to blow up the aircraft.

Crew members and passengers on Delta flight 2148 to Tampa subdued Stanley Dwayne Sheffield, 46. He was taken into federal custody after the plane landed at 1:30 a.m. Friday.

"I am going to bring this plane down," Sheffield said. The complaint said he also shouted: "You need to land this plane or I'm going to blow it up" and, "I will blow up this plane and take you all with me." He then approached the cockpit door, again shouting, "Get behind me, Satan."

Several passengers struggled with Sheffield and tied him up with seat belt extenders and nylon hand restraints.

Yep, after 9/11 passengers aren't going to just sit back and be threatened. They're going to take action.

That quote was from the Gospels.

7. I didn't quite get that one either.... "Get behind me, Satan?". It just doesn't add up.....
Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 03:28 PM by TheEuclideanOne
If he was speaking literally, I would expect him to want Satan in Front of him, unless, of course he was being attacked behind. I think that Satan can handle trivial tasks like opening doors. In fact, that seems well below his pay grade. He could probably even pop off all of the doors of the plane simultaneously for some serious dramatic effect if he really wanted to. If the guy honestly thought that Satan was there with him, somebody really needs to sit down with the guy about setting his goals a bit higher. Perhaps he should read "The Secret"!

If he was speaking metaphorically, as in "Satan, join my cause", I think that he would have to plan that out just a little bit ahead of time and definitely well before the flight began. Hasn't this guy ever heard of a pact with the devil? Didn't he think to do that before the flight. WTF? Sounds like poor planning if you ask me. Satan is pretty busy these days and was probably at a Tea Party rally, he can't just pop onto a plane at the drop of a hat when some guy realizes that he is in over his head.

9. Allow me to dip into my inexhaustible fund of knowledge here...
I think the story, from scripture, is that Jesus was wandering in the wilderness preparing himself for what he knew would ultimately be his earthly ordeal, when the Devil popped up in front of him and offered him all kinds of lovely goodies to abandon his pre-ordained role. Jesus said, "Get thee behind me Satan" meaning, not, "I welcome your support," but "Get out of my face, you evil sob and take all your nasty little temptations with you." And Jesus walked right past him.
But you already knew that, didn't you?
What in the world it all meant to the deranged guy on the plane is beyond my powers, such as they are.

11. Sorry. This was at near the end of Jesus' ministry, and he was speaking to Simon Peter
at the time. Peter was warning Jesus not to go to Jerusalem, because the Pharisees and Saduccees were waiting for a chance to arrest and execute him.

Peter meant well, but as it was Jesus' mission to be arrested and executed, it could be argued that Peter was unwittingly acting in Satan's interest in trying to prevent the resurrection.

Jesus responded to Peter's warning: "Get thee behind me, Satan."

15. He said it twice in the New Testament, actually.
Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 04:18 PM by Demoiselle
Satan offered him all the kingdoms in the world or some such if he would renounce his destiny,he said get thee behind me Satan then, and used the same words to Peter, later about going to Jerusalem.
I'd forgotten about Peter. To be sure, I googled it. (LUKE 4, 5-8, MATTHEW 14, 23.)

24. Hey, Tank. Are you picking a fight with me?
Not that it's any of your business, but my mother, a high school English teacher, encouraged me to read the Bible as LITERATURE. Especially the King James version. Because, she said, it's got so many great stories. She was right. The writing is glorious (except, perhaps, for the "begats" and the images are beautiful and horrifying and heartbreaking and gentle and just about everything else you can name.

I'd be happy to recite Elmore Leonard plots to you, too. But I'm not planning to commit a crime anytime soon.

32. if he's manic- yes- he could have seemed perfectly normal one minute and flip out the next...
i have a family member who has bipolar disorder, and when they are sick, you never know when, why or where the mania is going to morph into psychosis. (or for that matter when the mania is going to take over for a seemingly stable person recently off meds/or if med levels are off kilter)

It's really painful to watch.

37. the hardest part is when you try to tell them they need help, and they refuse.
early intervention can make a huge impact on the time frame for re-establishing stability with meds- and sometimes, the mania feels so good, they don't want it to end. It's been described to me as the best drug on earth, and they had done their research. This person cycles to psychosis without intervention, and it's horrific- i can see them doing just what happened in the OP. Religiosity is a main component of their episodes, as well as hallucinations, paranoia, and hearing voices. I bet 'get behind me Satan' was being said directly to a vision or a voice.

sounds all too familiar, although my family member is rarely violent, thank goodness- and has vitally important family support and ongoing long-term psychiatric care (and good insurance)

ps-they are also a republican- lol. a little levity helps.

38. i hate that i was right...
bipolar disorder is so complicated and difficult to manage, every brain is different and needs it's own system of therapy, meds, and support to maintain stability. I hope he has insurance.
