GOP Asks High Court to Undo 'Soft Money' Ban
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Republican Party is asking the Supreme Court to allow political parties to raise unlimited contributions, the latest outgrowth of the court's decision to unleash corporate and labor spending in federal elections.

The filing on Friday seeks to undo the ban on the raising of soft money -- unlimited donations from corporations, unions and others -- by national party committees.

The GOP says the Supreme Court's rationale in January for removing restrictions on corporate and union spending in federal elections should lead to a similar removal of the restriction on such fundraising by national political parties.

The soft money ban was a cornerstone of the 2002 overhaul of federal campaign finance law. Just last month, a federal court in Washington said it lacked authority to overturn the soft money ban.

Can the SCOTUS that put King George in as president be trusted to keep politics honest? Doubt it.

2. Ask? The Republican Party TELLS the Supreme Court what to do!
Who do you think will be sending the money to Roberts and and Alito's offshore bank accounts?

3. If they were smart, business should send in their lobbyists to stop this
If it passes politicians will be requiring bigger checks from them for pay to play favors.

4. Well, let's see, I'm of the belief they already have access & spend
illegally gotten money.

I'm sure they're hurting right now for legal money. After all, how can anyone expect them to pay for the political stuff and pay their credit card bills, too?

I don't trust SCOTUS.

6. Ridiculous.
And I REALLY wish they would stop putting "labor" in, as if the Court, by changing the rules for both labor and corporations, somehow means they are even.

Unions don't have anywhere near the money that corporations do, and it comes from us - the members - to help with things like insurance and pensions. We simply don't have the money to compete with corporations, and I wish the media would stop painting it as if we do.

Nor do we have the same intent! Its a David v. Goliath situation, with massive profits and the desire for more massive profits pitted against those who just want to make a decent living, all wrapped up in the holy free market. There simply is no even fight there.

"Citizens United" was a terrible decision, and this filing is yet another in what will be a long string of terrible repercussions.

9. Of course they're doing this.
This is not surprising. It would greatly help their campaign since many rich people are generally conservative.

10. Countdown To Big Tea Party Rally In Favor Of Unlimited Corporate Money In Campaigns...
You have to be impressed with how the right wing media has managed to manipulate anger at Wall Street into activism defending corporations from financial reform, and promoting their influence in elections.
