Sheriff Joe Arpaio supports Arizona's new immigration law
Source: NECN

Outspoken illegal immigration opponent Sheriff Joe Arpaio is known for his tough crackdowns on illegal immigrants.

He is cheering Arizona's new immigration law which was signed Friday by Governor Jan Brewer. During a press conference Saturday, Sheriff Joe Arpaio talked about how the bill will help him further his agenda.

Among other things, he said it gives him new authority to detain undocumented residents who aren't accused of committing other crimes.

I know. This is just confirmation of something we already assumed to be true, but just wanted to make it official.

Interesting the Arpaio confirmed that he feels he can stop and detain people who aren't accused of any other crime. If they're not accused of anything else, I wonder what basis Arpaio will use to stop them in the first place? (I think we know the answer to that one.) Do you randomly stop every tenth or hundredth or thousandth person? Or do you use some other means to figure who you're going to stop and question even though they are not accused of any other crime?

3. Arpaio is under investigation for civil rights abuses.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/01/08/politics/main6071928.shtml

Were the investigation to reveal that he is guilty of these violations it would sure be a great pleasure to see him removed from public service.

4. Nazi Joe Arpaio and his SS officers! They are not immigration officials.
Can we see your papers (and Shoes)? Arizona (and Tejas) need to become their own supressive, racsist country. Politically, and socially they are black eyes on the US.

14. I wonder if it also isn't what the psychologists diagnose as
oppositional-defiant conduct... or whatever it's called.

They KNOW this is going to create enormous coast-to-coast controversy, and anger, and splitting of neighborhoods, and provoke court challenges.

And they're doing it anyway.

9. In the civilized world, a police or sheriff department officer who was under
investigation for breaking the law would be put on leave until the investigation is finished and the officer is cleared of wrongdoing. How come Arpaio gets to continue to set policy, even though there's clear evidence that he's unfit for office?

Secret confession: I thought a bad word when I saw his name on this headline.

23. And the law is the Sheriff Joe Protection & Enabling Act
Other law enforcement agencies & administrators do not support the law, but that is because they are sane and rational.

I really think Joe and his goons have 'the goods' on a lot of AZ pols and used the fruits of their investigations to make sure Joe got his law to cover (he thinks) his own ass.

24. Entirely possible. An Arpaio enabling act... that's the feel it has.
This thing is going straight into the courts, likely fairly soon, too.

One of these days Humpty Joe is going to have a great fall. It may come as the result of the investigation of civil rights abuses, or perhaps extortion. I'm only speculating and have no facts.

But good lord let's live in a country where "Joe and his goons" have no purchase.

38. I think that is why this law was passed. It gives cover
to civil rights abusers like Arpaio. I think he even mentioned that, that it gives him 'more authority' to continue to do what he has been doing.

11. That's exactly right
He is elected by the majority of the voters of Maricopa County, over and over again. So, if Joe is a racist what does that say about those who keep voting for him?

Arpaio is nothing more then the mirror image of the voters who keep showing their support for him. This way they can hide by using the privacy of the ballot box and never have to reveal what kind of bigots they are.

This is going to get very interesting. I think the Law of Unintended Consequences is going to bite the proponents of this law in the ass big time.

Here are some answers to questions about the bill from a law professor:

22. "If you look Mexican or Hispanic or Asian or Black, then you should carry ID
because there's already some evidence that you could fall into this category." So says University of Arizona law professor and constitutional law expert.

So depending upon your race, your appearance, what language you speak or accent you have it would appear to be prudent to carry documentation in Arizona.

Edited on Sun Apr-25-10 12:57 PM by DesertRat
Citizens are not required to carry anything. But I always carry my driver's license with me which I assume that most people will do so.

We have many Hispanic police officers in AZ. I'd like to hear what they think about the law and how they will enforce it.

Almost everyone has either a drivers license or some other form of state issued i.d. Either would be good under the new law.

Edited on Sun Apr-25-10 01:36 PM by Hansel
What if you are transporting American citizen(s) with a foreign accent in your car who didn't grab their license because they weren't going to drive? You know look like you are transporting undocumented immigrants. Think the police are going to take your word for it that you are not? Count on it, they won't.

Sorry, but many times law abiding citizens go out in public without so much as carrying a drivers license if they don't plan on driving. Carrying your drivers license is only required if you are driving.

33. I am responsing to the words "average Arizona resident"
I guarantee you that out of 100 people walking down a street (not driving) at least 90 of them will have some form of state issued i.d. The state issues other i.d.s besides drivers licenses. There are just too many things in life where you need state issued i.d. and most people carry something. That is the real world.

40. Not really...
One need only carry a credit card or debit card (or even better, cash -- starve those assholes at Visa too) to make purchases...

And one still doesn't need ID to walk around and be...yet...

I'm urging all of my fellow Arizonans to NEVER carry ID unless you absolutely have to...

Clog up the gears of the machine!!!

I know some facts I can not make public, but the bad news for Arpaio is there. The investigation into his conduct is very involved and some interesting happens that aren't available as of yet will come out before too long. I just hope it happens in the not to distant future, but it is going to happen.
