WHO warns of danger of untreatable gonorrhoea
Source: Xinhua

MANILA, 29 April (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Thursday that gonorrhoea may soon become untreatable unless urgent measures are taken to prevent and treat the sexually transmitted infection.

Improper use of antibiotics has resulted in widespread antimicrobial resistance to the disease, with cheaper, first-line antibiotics losing their effectiveness, WHO said in a press release.

If this continues, it will only be a matter of time before gonorrhoea develops resistance to third-generation cephalosporin. Australia, China's Hong Kong and Japan have reported treatment failures with oral cephalosporin, which is currently used in the last-line treatment of gonorrhoea.

"We are dealing with a serious issue with the implication that gonorrhoea may become untreatable," said Dr Shin Young-soo, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific. "This will have a major impact on our efforts to control the disease and will result in an increase in serious health-related complications," Dr Shin said.

3. back in the 70s I worked in the refugee camps in SE Asia

the CDC officials (except one) posted to monitor our testing all boasted that any sexually transmitted disease could easily be treated by antibiotics. They all (except one) frequently visited prostitution areas.

I wonder if they stopped before it was too late.

2. Since this is Xinhua
it could be part of the official Chinese "abstinence only" sex education. I would like to see the actual WHO report.

5. Seems so familiar...I believe I was told this when earning my VSR back in 70-71
Getting "shot down" was one thing, getting antibiotic resistant strains was another...

Then, too, there were pictures to accompany stories of commie prostitutes who had razor blades anchored in their vaginas so as to cut the horny soldiers dick like split banana.

Drug resistance in every pathogen is a very real concern and for many bacteria a serious problem, but due to decades of propaganda re STD's credibility is also an issue.
