Perry: Arizona immigration law not right for Texas
Source: Houston Chronicle

AUSTIN — Arizona's tough new illegal immigration enforcement law would not be right for Texas, Gov. Rick Perry said Thursday, upholding the state's long-held tradition of rejecting harsh anti-immigrant policies...

“I fully recognize and support a state's right and obligation to protect its citizens, but I have concerns with portions of the law passed in Arizona and believe it would not be the right direction for Texas,” Perry said in a written statement.

“For example, some aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected alien, taking them away from their existing law enforcement duties, which are critical to keeping citizens safe.”

I hope the teabaggers put up a third candidate to run. I think Bill White has got a decent chance regardless, but if the teabaggers fraction, I really like White's odds

2. Texas is a Mexican state to begin with
No one can argue against the plot Polk and Tyler made to annex that province from Mexico.

History is not on Perry's side.

large community of Latinos here in California, but lets be honest, other races (collective Americans) have join with them, and also whites as well. We the People are pissed.

8. Arizona seems to be the only border state that doesn't recognize that fact.
As a Texan, I'm hoping that White beat Gov. Goodhair. If it doesn't happen this election, then very soon. The demographics are changing here.

12. As a Texan...
I'd like to welcome all Arizona Mexicans (as well as anyone else from Arizona who is afraid/angered of this stupid new law) to Texas. With your help, maybe we can change this state for good!

I've lived in Texas my whole short life, and I really feel like some semblance of sanity is coming over the state (except for the State Board of Education which is the most embarrassing part of the state). It's small, but hopefully when I grow old, I can tell my grandkids about how we changed Texas into a progressive place! We just need to get Bill White in that Governor's seat.

22. Yeah, Abbott needs to go
I remember Radnofsky from her attempt to unseat Kay Bailey in the Senate. She'd do well as the AG.

9. It's an election year. He'd be a fool to say anything to alienate such a large voting block
24% of registered voters in Texas are Latino. :D

19. The teabagger lost against Perry
Edited on Fri Apr-30-10 03:29 AM by onestepforward
during the repub. primary. Her name is Debra Medina. From Wiki: "Medina finished with 18.6% of the vote, behind Perry (51.1%) and Hutchinson (30.3%)"

Bill White has a solid chance to win. He is only down by 4 points. :)

21. Only because it would doom the GOP there.
If Latinos were a smaller percentage of the citizenry, Perry would think it's "100% right for Texas." This is exactly why it's wonderful that we are headed to a no majority US.
