Rick Perry: Oil spill may be 'act of God'

Texas Gov. Rick Perry Monday offered a stern warning against halting oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of a massive oil leak, and he raised the question of whether the explosion was an “act of God.”

The Republican governor, speaking at the Chamber of Commerce in Washington, warned against a “a knee-jerk reaction” to the spill and said the government doesn’t know what caused the leak, which took 11 lives and threatens the Gulf coast’s vast fishing industry.

“We don’t know what the event that has allowed for this massive oil to be released,” Perry said alongside several other governors on a panel Monday. “And until we know that, I hope we don’t see a knee-jerk reaction across this country that says we’re going to shut down drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, because the cost to this country will be staggering.”

Perry questioned whether the spill was “just an act of God that occurred” and said that any “politically driven” decisions could put the U.S. in further economic peril.

is that it is not the fault of BP (or any of the other oil companies that this could have happened to), but saying that something is an "Act of God" is just the fundie way of saying "shit happens".

it's the same thing really. Of course, it's pretty hard to see how that is the case, other than the fact that natural geological forces did destroy the rig. But obviously man made technology is meant to handle those things.

Well, if 9/11, according to some, was God's punishment for homosexuality & abortion, then it stands to reason that tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, unseasonal snow, and gulf oil spills must be God's punishment exacted against the Southern states for voting Republican.

Brown, most infamous for his response to Hurricane Katrina, told Neil Cavuto that Obama and his administration are thrilled by the current disaster in the Gulf. "This is exactly what they want, because now he can pander to the environmentalists and say, 'I'm gonna shut it down because it's too dangerous,'" Brown said. "This president has never supported big oil, he's never supported offshore drilling, and now he has an excuse to shut it back down."
