Woman stabs 4 in Southern Calif. Target store
Source: AP via Yahoo

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – A woman who stabbed and wounded four people in a busy Target store Monday afternoon was arrested when an off-duty sheriff's deputy pulled his gun and ordered the woman to the ground as screaming shoppers ran from the building, authorities said.

Layla Trawick used a butcher's knife and a carving knife to attack the victims, using both blades at the same time — one in each hand, like in the movie "Psycho," sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said

"She was literally walking up and down the aisles slashing people," he said.

A mother holding her baby was stabbed in the neck and was taken to the hospital, where she was in stable condition, Whitmore said. The baby was unhurt and all four victims were expected to survive.

8. And I suppose...
....had the woman been armed with a handgun, and the wounds inflicted were on a par with that of the knives she wielded, this comment, "How much more proof do we need that this nation desperately needs Federal GUN control legislation?" would also have been perceived as "provoking childish reaction"? Thanks.

46. It was an off-duty deputy who happened to be in the store . . . with a gun . . .
Are you saying that Target now needs armed guards on duty in all their stores?

Meanwhile, to his credit, he didn't immediately shoot her but rather told her to

drop the weapons.

Meanwhile, there is an amazing amount of attention given by these stores to shoplifting --

and not at Target, but in one of our chain stores I've seen quite immediate response to

anyone who doesn't look "right" . . . !!!

Current conditions with economy and health care are also increasing the potential for

citizens and motorists to display increasingly violent behavior -- and as long as these

circumstances exist and continue to increase, so will this behavior.

52. Violent behavior by a motorist: "Pittsburgh Cop Accused of Pulling Gun in Road Rage Incident"
It's not the gun, it's the person with it:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=118x315222

Pittsburgh Cop Accused of Pulling Gun in Road Rage Incident

State police filed multiple charges against a Pittsburgh police officer who allegedly became enraged and pulled a gun following a crash on the Parkway East Saturday morning.

Detective Bradley Walker, 43, got out of his vehicle after the minor crash at 10:16 a.m. on the outbound side of the highway near the Oakland exit, according to state police, who did not identify him as a police officer in their release. Detective Walker then reportedly punched and kicked the other vehicle's driver-side door and punched out the windshield and driver-side door window, state police said.

Detective Walker then reached into the vehicle and choked Jarret Fate, 29, of Pittsburgh, police said.

Mr. Fate tried to get away, but Detective Walker jumped into his vehicle and cut off the other driver.

Police said Detective Walker pulled out a pistol and pointed it at Mr. Fate. Mr. Fate gave Detective Walker his license and insurance card, and Detective Walker copied the information before throwing the cards back at Fate.

21. Won't do any good; people will just start using rocks
Then we'll have to go through years of rock-control legislation ( and keep in mind, us liberals will take a pummicing in the polls from that), then the right to have rocks will just be another freedom that we took for granite and lost. Then people will just pick up dirt clods, and our law books will have to be soiled with bans on those.

It'll always be something.

http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/local/east_bay&id=7421126

An Antioch woman is accused of going on a stabbing rampage inside a Southern California target store on Monday. She has a history of mental illness, according to her mother.

According to her mother, Layla Trawick has a series of mental issues and all attempts to get her medicated or in an institution have failed. Trawick's mother says her daughter has acted out before, but nothing like the stabbing.

"I'd been trying to get her institutionalized for years," said the mother.

Trawick's mother did not want to appear on camera, but she told ABC7 her daughter has been mentally ill since childhood with bipolar and schizophrenia.

I think this more an example of poor mental healthcare. Her family has been trying for years to get her treatment.

Of all the people I've met over the years that were "officially" mentally ill, only a couple of them were a threat to others.

The one that did really go off the beam got tackled before anyone was seriously hurt- but it did take five people to get her
in restraints. She's doing better the last I heard.

61. Yes I had an relative who had an "illegal throat disease" and she was
institutionalized until Regan closed all the facilities in the 70's. She was in a halfway house when she drank drano because she saw a commecial advertising that it would unplug anything. Medications do help but most are living on their own and forget or refuse to take them. Very sad. But some like this woman will probably need to be institutionalized to get medications and therapy for life.

I've at least three or four times or more seen security activated when they have

thought someone was shoplifting -- or someone looked like they didn't belong in the

store. That would be at Macy's and Lord & Taylor stores in Malls.

Obviously, this woman would have looked like someone to keep an eye on???

30. this is what all Cops should be like
<Grant, 26, grabbed his duty weapon, identified himself as a sheriff's deputy and ordered the woman to drop the knives, he said. She ran away and he followed her from aisle to aisle.

Grant followed Trawick from aisle to aisle, until she turned and waved the knives at him from above her head, he said.

But he decided not to shoot because he didn't feel his life was in jeopardy, he said. For a second time, he ordered her to drop the knives and finally she complied.

"I was more concerned about the knife, more than what she was saying," Grant said. "Her facial expression was someone who was lost, confused, didn't know exactly where they were.">
