Ex-FEMA chief: Obama using oil spill to his advantage
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Former FEMA director Michael Brown is not backing off his charge that the Obama administration wants to use the Gulf Coast oil spill as a plot to put an end to offshore drilling.

"They want a crisis like this, so that they can use a crisis like this to shut down offshore and gas drilling," he said Tuesday night on CNN's "AC 360°."

His remarks came a day after he told Fox News' "Your World with Neil Cavuto" that the oil slick is "exactly what they want, because now he can pander to the environmentalists and say, 'I'm going to shut it down because it's too dangerous.' While Mexico and China and everybody else drills in the Gulf, we're going to get shut down."

Pressed by CNN for evidence to back up his claim, Brown pointed to an interview that then-Sen. Barack Obama gave to The San Francisco Chronicle in January 2008. Obama told the Chronicle editorial board that he wanted cap-and-trade legislation to be as strong as possible.

So, former FEMA chief Michael Brown is continuing to push Rush Limbaugh's eco-terrorist meme by claiming that President Obama planned to use this crisis to shut down offshore drilling. It is amazing that this guy once ran FEMA. Heckuva job Brownie.

1. Heckuva Job Brownie needs to go lie by his dish and STFU.
That incompetent tool has no business criticizing anybody for anything, ever.

2. Isn't there an Arabian horse show that Heckuva Job Brownie should be running?
I bet fewer people died when he was messing up horse shows than when he was messing up FEMA.

3. Very curious how quick and bold they were with this talking point. Especially since Halliburton
physically had the last contact with the rig, and how Rove's game is to self sabotage and accuse the other side of doing the tampering.

Someone should tattoo that on Brownie's hand for him.

7. That's right you asshole...
...we environmentalist now have the final nail in the unregulated offshore drilling industries' coffin.

That's it. Game over for you assholes. You WILL do what we want from here on out.

It is a big price to pay. But it took this major hit on the environment to show the high-priced lies were just that.

There's no place too low for these neo-cons to go. It's like saying Katrina was ordered up to make Bush and Brown look bad.

15. CNN Has Been On A Crusade To Blame The Obama Administration and Spare BP
It has been pretty amazing to witness. Anderson Cooper was asking a history professor to defend the Obama adminstration, as AC tried to blame the whole mess on Obama, not BP. The historian (Brinkley) was kind of puzzled as to why he was being asked to speak on behalf of the Obama administration.

Edited on Thu May-06-10 12:33 AM by chill_wind
here at DU the other day that claiming Obama and/or enviros worked at sabotage to create a deterrence to continued offshore drilling is like saying that "burning the house down to prove to a child that matches are dangerous" somehow makes sense. It's just nuts.

14. And the GOP uses hurricanes to their advantage
How is that? A good level 5 can literally destroy a low-lying or coastal city thereby displacing predominantly Democratic voters and tipping the congressional district and the state to a deeper shade of red. So don't do the following: Don't undertake necessary preparations in advance of a major disaster and don't respond after it happens. Let nature have her way, and reap the political benefits down the road. Wait a minute? This is excatly what has happened. Therefore not a good comparison to what Brownie is pushing, which is pure unadulterated fiction.

19. Duh. They just killed the Gulf of Mexico. Any sane person would say that this
is, in fact, an excellent reason to shut down off-shore drilling.

Worst environmental catastrophe in US history, and Brownie says "drill, baby, drill".

I'll say it again, "Heckuva job, Brownie".

21. Wasn't the spill in 1979 bigger?
and the gulf recovered. But I think Obama should just seize BP assets to pay for the damage.. Here's a petition to sign, if you agree.

30. Its A Way To Appear Moderate - Show The Most RW Crazy Viewpoint...
...then portray a mere corporate conservative viewpoint as moderate. This way birthers are portrayed as legitimate while those who call President Obama a socialist are then seen as to the left of the birthers.

29. Why the hell is Michael Brown being asked about ANYTHING related to FEMA?
Didn't Heckuva Job Brownie get fired from his work at FEMA for utter incompetence? Or at least resign in lieu of termination? If HJB thinks Obama's fucking up the response to the oil spill, all I can read is Obama's doing at least a decent job.

31. He was asked this to create a talking point sort of based on it
which was to imply that Obama did it himself, or environmentalist went a mile down and blew up the pipe and got away without anyone seeing them coming or going.
