Russian regional chief under fire 'for meeting aliens'

AFP - A Russian MP has asked an eccentric regional leader to explain his behaviour after claiming on state television that he was visited at home by aliens in a UFO, media reported Thursday.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, head of the Buddhist Kalmykia region of southern Russia and president of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), announced without apparent irony on a high-profile chat show he had met the aliens in 1997.

In an equally bizarre twist, Andrei Lebedev, an MP for the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party, has now written to President Dmitry Medvedev raising fears that secret information could have been disclosed in the close encounter.

"I ask you to say if the head of Kalmykia has made an official report to the Russian presidency about his contacts with representatives of an alien civilization," he said, quoted by tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda and other media.

...it sounds like he was experiencing sleep paralysis. Basically, when you go to sleep your body becomes paralyzed. This is super important and keeps you from thrashing around in your sleep, hurting yourself or someone else. However, there are times when things don't work right and you experience sleep paralysis. In this state you're somewhere between being awake and asleep. It's quite terrifying, actually, as I've had it happen to me before. In this state, because your mind is somewhere between being awake and dreaming you begin to hallucinate.

A lot of people who experience this claim they've been visited by aliens.

In my own several experiences with sleep paralysis, I realized that I was awake, but couldn't move. I began to hallucinate. I was certain there was someone else in the room with me, and I wanted to roll over and move - but I couldn't! I was paralyzed. I wanted to scream for help, but couldn't open my mouth or make anything work. Nothing moved, my eyes couldn't even open all the way. Finally, after several minutes I fully woke up and was able to move again just like normal. After calming down I was able to go back to sleep as normal, without problem.

Other times it happened, I was having visual and auditory hallucinations as well. One time, I didn't even think I was in my room any longer.

Every time it's happened to me it's been a result of absolute extreme exhaustion. Over twenty-four hours without sleep, and normally happened moments after I got into the bed. That's what it sounds like in this case, because he claimed that he was just starting to fall asleep when the "aliens" visited.

...experience astral journeys. but that's another thing - kind of leaving the body and go somewhere you later discover as an existing place you never heard of nor were before, but you can actually describe as if you had.

Every healthy human being experiences sleep paralysis as much as they experience dreams.
It's a normal mechanism not to hurt ourselves while dreaming. It happens when you are suddenly woken up during REM.
And you can tell when you wake up with sleep paralysis, as much as you can tell dreams from reality.
There is an intelligent unknown force visiting us on rare occasions. That is real.

I've read many--as in thousands--of reports of alien visits but this is the first one that I've heard of that had the aliens appearing in a tube.
