Largest Nursing Strike In U.S. History Looms In Minnesota
Source: Workers Independent News

The largest nursing strike in US history could be just around the corner. Jesse Russell reports:

Fourteen nonprofit hospitals in the Minneapolis-St. Paul region could be the target of what would likely be the largest nursing strike in United States history. The Minnesota Nurses Union is holding a strike vote on May 19 and if approved the negotiating team would have the authority to call a strike if they can’t reach an agreement with the hospitals regarding a new contract. Twelve thousand nurses could walk off the job with a plan by the hospitals to cut pension benefits and make changes to work rules at the core of the disagreement. During the next two weeks nurses will be holding informational pickets in an attempt to shore up support with the public in the event a strike does occur. As a precaution the hospitals have already begun seeking replacement workers at wages higher than what many of the nurses are currently paid.

1. If Insurance Companies were not skimming 30% off the top, there would...
..be plenty of monies to keep Nurses earning a decent wage.

2. If you read it through,,,
you will love the last sentence. "As a precaution the hospitals have already begun seeking replacement workers at wages higher than what many of the nurses are currently paid."

5. Yep, I've been getting robocalls from them
I suppose they just glean our names from state databases or maybe it's because I used to work as a travel nurse (different from a scab - very different).

3. I support the Nurses
If you have been in the hospitals in the last 20 years you know they are over loaded and over worked.

4. And that would be why I'm getting robocalls
Why is it that a company would pay such obscene amounts of money to scabs to avoid giving basic rights and a little money to the workers? It boggles.

This nurse will not cross a picket line.

6. Nurses striking . .
.
.
.

something wrong with that.

we need healthcare

I know that up here nurses make WELL over $50,000 a year, personally know one that makes over $100,000

I'm on welfare, live on less than $8,000 a year.

Please find another way to solve your differences with your employers dear nurses other than to deprive us of already thin medical care

Thank You

7. They are fighting for better staffing ratios of nuses to patients
Edited on Fri May-07-10 09:23 PM by Omaha Steve

How do you pay for net usage, camping and fishing on welfare? Or why is it you camp and fish while getting welfare? And Canada has heath care with strikes. Just what is your beef?

When you need care, I hope you have a nurse period. That thin health care your talking about it what they are doing something about. Are you taking shots at Wall St. too?

"Now more than ever, the nurses of Minnesota stand united," said MNA President Linda Hamilton, a Registered Nurse in the Children's Hospital system. "We are strong, we are ready and we are speaking with one voice. And today is just the latest example of Minnesota nurses and our unwavering commitment to ensuring the men, women and children we care for every day will be safe."

"How our buildings are staffed really decides what kind of patient care you get - and that's why we're fighting for safe staffing," said Diane Thielbar, an RN at Minneapolis Children's Hospital with 33 years of experience.

9. I read this response, plus your inquiry in a PM
.
.
.

your pm had no text -

just "Waiting for a reply on your nurses post in LBN "

so here it is:

QUESTIONS

How do you pay for net usage, camping and fishing on welfare? Or why is it you camp and fish while getting welfare? And Canada has heath care with strikes. Just what is your beef?

ANSWERS

First of all - I thought that was none of your business, but then I thought again that many on DU might like to know . . .

ALSO

"I'm on welfare' does not mean that I do not work and have no other income.

mind you - Welfare takes 50% of whatever I earn, but I have had employment of some sort EVERY YEAR

temporary, part-time

I take it

My profile was written long ago

"hobbies" such as camping and fishing have not been affordable for the last 5 years

but they are STILL hobbies

like playing chess/backgammon with friends ( who are not allowed to visit me)

OH

btw

my "landlady" is an illegal USAmerican

ponder that

8. They're striking to get more nurses on the job so you don't have to worry about "thin" medical care.
