White supremacists planned World Cup bombings
Five white supremacists have appeared in court after being charged with terrorism in South Africa over an alleged plot to blow up townships ahead of the World Cup.

Musa Zondi, spokesman for the host nation's elite Hawks investigations unit, said the group had planned to detonate bombs in areas inhabited by blacks during the weeks before the football tournament kicks off. He said the group claimed to have been motivated by the murder last month of far right leader Eugene Terreblanche, who was allegedly killed by two black farm workers.

The suspects, aged between 19 and 36, were initially arrested in April in the northern town of Phalaborwa on suspicion of defiling the grave stone of a leading black diplomat.

Mr Zondi said their links to the alleged deeper plot were uncovered during further police questioning. He added: "The men were arrested for smashing up and wrecking the headstone of Norman Mashabane, a former South African ambassador to the Far East.

"Under further questioning it turned out they were part of a bigger group who did not much like having to live alongside black South Africans.
