ROBERT, La. (AP) — Video released by BP shows oil spewing from a yellowish, broken pipe 5,000 feet below the surface. The oil looks like steam rushing from a geyser.

The video released Wednesday gives a not-yet-seen glimpse of the leaking well a mile underwater. The stream occasionally can be seen becoming lighter as natural gas mixes into the gusher.

Natural gas has been flowing from the well since the beginning. BP's Doug Suttles says the rate natural gas has been flowing out hasn't changed in the 21 days since the Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of Mexico.

3. maybe now the media will start calling it what it is: a Geyser
and stop trivializing it by calling it a spill or leak. :(

4. I doubt it. They have done a great job so far in not covering this news

I assume BP told them their ad budget would depend on it... Because it something is clear by now is that apparently some golf player having affairs is far more news worthy, than a huge disaster in the making which will likely affect nature in a very deep and negative way (and by extension the lives of the millions of people living by the Gulf).

Let's face it, the US media is another corporate entity. They are not interested in the "news" as much as they are simply looking forward to ad revenue in order to maximize profits.

We are literally living in Idiocracy now...

5. I hear ya! I was listening to late-night KGO talk, and John Rothman
(who has been doing quite a bit of coverage, for those awake between 10pm-1am) anyway, Rothman kept referring to it as "the spill," and I kept thinking "No, it's a freaking GIANT ONGOING OIL PUMP!"

Calling it a "spill" mischaracterizes what's going on down there. :(

8. BP Releases Oil Spill Video After Pressure From White House and Media
Source: ABC News

Twenty-three days after the explosion and under pressure from the White House and the media, BP today finally released a thirty second underwater video of the oil from its broken well spewing into the Gulf of Mexico.

The video shows the black plume of the oil and a white plume which industry experts said was natural gas escaping into the water.

BP said the video was released only today because the it had not received a request for the video until Monday. In fact, ABC News and other news organizations made numerous requests over the past few weeks for the video. When ABC News reporters were allowed into the BP command center last week, the monitors showing the video had been turned off.

Requests for the video to the White House and the Coast Guard had been referred to BP, because as a Coast Guard officials told reporters today, "the video is BP's."

White House and Coast Guard officials rejected suggestions that they had ceded too much control of the oil spill to BP. "In this case, the Coast Guard encouraged BP to make (the) video responsive to requests available to the press and today they did," the Coast Guard said in a statement to ABC News.

11. All that greenhouse gas bubbling up and into the atmosphere.
In addition to that, this sure looks like more than "5,000 barrels a day" to me.

I have a sinking feeling that the entire volume of that field will end up flowing out of that hole into the gulf and, eventually, every ocean in the world.

12. I don't wanna believe it, but this could be the biggest disaster of our lives, praying that's not
the case... but man, they've got to get it stopped. Why didn't the feds take over immediately? Or am I wrong, and they did?

13. Shear guess on my part but based on waste water systems I have worked on...
I would guess that is around a 750 to 1000 gallon a minute flow.

Hard to tell how much of it is gas but if the exit is around a 12 inch diameter it is safe to put it around 1,000,000 gallons a day.

I wish there was something in the foreground to give it scale.
