Crew argued over drilling plan before rig explosion
Source: Wall Street Journal

About 11 hours before the Deepwater Horizon exploded, a disagreement took place between the top manager for oil giant BP PLC on the drilling rig and his counterpart for the rig's owner, Transocean Ltd., concerning the final steps in shutting down the nearly completed well, according to a worker's sworn statement.

Michael Williams, a Transocean employee who was chief electronics technician on the rig, said there was "confusion" between those high-ranking officials in an 11 a.m. meeting on the day of the rig blast, according to a sworn statement from Mr. Williams reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. Mr. Williams himself attended the meeting.

to "Der Spiegel", a highly respected and widely read news magazine here in Germany. This horrible disaster means that we are witnessing the destruction of an entire eco-system. A way of life, a way to make a living will be gone. Animals and humans alike will be suffering for decades to come.

This needs to spread far and wide. We need to find out the truth.

I want to cry and choke the living shit out of those responsible for this tragedy at the same time.

32. That's a good summation:
"I want to cry and choke the living shit out of those responsible for this tragedy at the same time."

I feel numb. From the day it happened, I have been preparing myself for when the whole truth is known. I have a creeping, sickening feeling that this is going to be far worse than what anyone is projecting (even now, 25 days into this disaster.)

22. Re; "Question about argument"

The disagreement was about completing a 300 foot cement cap at the bottom of the well "before" taking out the heavy mud and replacing this mud with sea water.

Had the well been properly capped with cement, gas could only have gotten up the well if the cement had not been set correctly.

25. the Blowout Preventer had been modified with an incompatible part that prevented
it from operating completely, because the part jam'd the cutters. the #2 backup plug to the jam'd #1 'cut and crimp' device had a "Dead Battery"...!! so it didn't work either.

14. idk, it might be better for oil companies if there was somoene to point the finger at.
If they can throw someone under the bus, pinpoint the cause of the explosion, and make regulations to prevent this from happening again, it might diminish the recently increased opposition to offshore drilling.

It's hard not to believe that Cheney's fingerprints are all over this disaster, given his long record of depravity.

30. Since there was also a high-ranking officials meeting occuring that morning
Edited on Sun May-16-10 03:13 AM by Stardust
on the rig purportedly "celebrating" their exemplary safety record, I'm wondering if the report of the safety celebration is a lie to cover up up the Schlumberger snit. Or maybe the Schumberger snit is simply internet conjecture (IOW, a lie.) Two meetings of high-ranking officials on the same day is too coincidental to suit this skeptic.

K&R anyway. The truth must come out.

WOW that one slipped right by me- of course all of the first bits of this story that came out of BP were nothing but PR.

34. After further reading, I came across a report that said the celebration
was going on later that evening, around 9-ish, and those celebrants were evacuated after the explosion.

A apologize for insinuating otherwise. :tinfoilhat:
