Newmarket confirms September release for controversial political movie
Marking the company's first acquisition since shepherding a certain biblical behemoth to celestial box office heights, Newmarket Films this time will court political controversy with John Sayles' neo-noir "Silver City," which puts a satirical spin on the present state of American democracy.

Oscar-winner Chris Cooper portrays a thinly veiled caricature of George W. Bush.

Set in Colorado in the core of America's "New West," the story concerns the state's gubernatorial race, during which the grammatically challenged, born-again candidate for governor is the scion of a right-wing political dynasty who fumbles his way to elected office as an unexplained corpse threatens his campaign, his family empire and the special-interest groups pulling his strings.

Newmarket is planning an early September release.

This movie is being released by Newmarket (The Passion Of Christ) right before the election. How much effort will the right wing put into trying to stop the release?

1. "How much effort will the right wing put into trying to stop the release?"
I doubt they'll put in much effort, because John Sayles films usually fly under the radar of pop culture. Awful shame, too. He's an American original.

I can see Chris Cooper really shining in this. Sounds great.

2. Chris Cooper is an unashamed liberal...
as well as a damn good actor. One of my favorites. His work as the dad in "October Sky" almost brought me to tears.

"Lone Star" is another Sayles film he shone in, along with Elizabeth Peña. It's very much recommended, if y'all haven't seen it.

4. Newmarket probably isn't going to let this movie go unnoticed
Look at how successful they were at turning controversy into profit with The Passion of Christ.

3. September is shaping up to be a great month
With this film, plus Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, plus a million protesters at the RNC convention in NYC. Time to take our country back!

7. This Could Be the Biggest Box Office Hit John Sayles Will Ever Have
And, having seen Sunshine State, I expect his take to be much more nuanced than both conservatives and liberals would like.
