Pelosi vows to end ‘Don’t ask, don't tell’ by the end of the year
Source: The Hill

The Pentagon’s “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy will be nothing but a memory by year’s end, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) declared Wednesday.

Pelosi, in an interview with The Hill, stopped short of laying all of her strategic cards on the table. She wouldn’t say whether the House will take the lead on the issue or predict when the Clinton administration-era tenet would be repealed.

But she made it clear ending “Don’t ask, don’t tell” is at the top of her agenda.

“I don’t have any doubt that ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ will be a memory by the end of this year,” she said.

1. Man, I hope she proves me wrong.
I doubt that this will be gone by 2011.

2. Yep, my first thought was, "we've heard this before," and I full of skepticism.

But hey, I, like you, would love to be proven wrong.

9. He could end the firings until the law is passed - sounds like the prudent thing to me
after all these are civil and human rights were talking about.

12. That's not Obama's call, either
By *law*, the SecDef currently determines who is fired.

13. He can make the order to him, please...
The rest is BS. He is commander in chief of the armed forces.

16. I don't believe the armed forces is a democratic organization.
If the commander in chief orders that these people not be dismissed, is that some violation of democracy? And is it particularly important, given the nature of the armed forces? He could determine that dismissing them is a threat to national security and the integrity of the armed forces.

24. Good point. And, as boppers well knows, Congress expressly empowered the President to
suspend discharges. See 10 U.S.C. 12305. Not that the CIC needs Congress's permission to either suspend discharges-- or to declare that being gay and in the military is not a detriment to the military.

There must be at least ten ways around DADT discharges. And, IMO, no one knows that better than Obama. It's about re-election--his and that of Congresscritters, not law or tradition.

or sends them a draft bill. Give me a break.

Obama's done that any number of times, on things like outlawing drug re-importation, not breaking up too big to fail companies, etc. And probably many more times that we know nothing about. And Congress has complied, willingly and often swiftly. And, more likely than not, Congress has been complying with the WH on this issue as well, including as to timing.

Besides, he's not been shy about Executive Orders, nor, as both CIC and Chief Exec., should he be in this case.

7. End of the year? Right after mid-term elections? Time to make sure the GLBT vote is lined up.
Take your time, Nance. No rush. It's only real people whose careers arebeing ruined and whose lives continue to be damaged by laws that say they are less than human, like DADT and DOMA.

How much damage has been done since Clinton got elected and failed to fulfill his campaign promises to the GLBT community?

How much damage has been done since you took over in 2006?

How much since January 2009?

If it happens, great, but I'll take action based upon results, not promises. So, only partially optimistic here.

15. It's amazing how far she's come
During chimpy's reign I wanted her gone, she seemed to cave on every important issue. But she's been absolutely great on everything since Obama came in, and I hope she remains speaker for a long time.
