Yemeni tribesmen kidnap U.S. couple near Sanaa
Source: reuters

(Reuters) - Armed Yemeni tribesmen kidnapped two American tourists, a husband and wife, near the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Monday, a Yemeni security source said.

The couple's Yemeni driver and translator were also taken hostage, and the kidnappers had made demands of the Yemeni government for their release, the source said.

Armed tribesmen ambushed a car carrying tourists and their Yemeni driver and took them to their area," one of the security officials said. Another official said that the kidnapping was not thought to have broader political motives.

Yemen, bordering the world's top oil exporter Saudi Arabia, surged to the forefront of Western security concerns after the Yemen-based regional arm of al Qaeda claimed responsibility for a failed attempt to bomb a U.S.-bound plane in December.

3. TOURIST? WTF!?!
Edited on Mon May-24-10 06:48 AM by SkyDaddy7
I would love to see a Yemeni Tourism AD. "COME SEE our war torn country and if you are lucky you might get kidnapped & be able to watch how Al-Queada works firsthand!"

Seriously, WTF? Why would anyone go on vacation to Yemen. What is there to do for an American couple except get kidnapped? Am I just naive or is there a reason folks would want to go to Yemen for vacation?

4. Like a lot of places on earth, it's pretty fascinating.

Shaharah Bridge, for example.

And I believe Yemen has a fairly booming trade in "spiritual tourism" -- prophet's tombs, big mosques and what-not. In biblical times, frankincense and myrrh were probably from the area.

That said, no thank you very much.

5. "Tourist Century Club"?
Your reaction was mine as well until I remembered an older couple who were acquaintances of my parents when I was a kid and who eventually travelled to places like that to be part of the "Century Club" by attempting to travel to at least 100 countries or more.... Back in the '50s, '60s and '70s, there were fewer "countries", so a bit harder to do.

9. OK, but there is an entire planet why Yemen? LOL!
Maybe it is just the thrill of danger? In that case I guess traveling to Yemen is like a thrill sport. It's all fun & games until someone gets kidnapped!
