BP pledges $500m to study oil spill's impact on gulf
Source: BBC News

BP has pledged $500m (£346m) to study the impact on the Gulf of Mexico of the oil spill, as top US officials flew over the area to assess BP's response.

A BP official said a bid to plug the leaking well with heavy mud and cement stood a 60-70% chance of success.

He said the company shared widespread public frustration with its inability to stem the leak.

BP is under increasing pressure from the US government, which has threatened to take over the response effort.

3. You mean study as in funneling money to lobbyists?
Which is where the cash will most likely wind up.

4. "US government, which has threatened to take over the response effort." ....
They're finally getting the message -- !!!

Would we ever have imagined anything like this having happened under Britain's control,

for one, and the private company remaining in charge?

6. "[the U.S.] has threatened to take over the response effort" Then hire BP to manage it at
'consultant' rates and force U.S. taxpayers to cover all the costs. Nationalizing in reverse. What a plan.

Capitalism will always be "successful" as long as you have Socialism to back it up when it gets into trouble.

8. We Don't Need Studies and Threats!
We NEED Action and remediation. I don't care if this hasn't happened before - get some bubble gum and plug up the leak. Mobilize the unemployed to do the clean-up. Ask for cooperation in CONSERVATION. BP doesn't have a monopoly on petroleum engineers.. Where is the Yankee ingenuity....This country has solved unprecedented problems before.
