Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson said Monday the government isn't prepared at this point to forbid BP to use a controversial chemical dispersant to fight the spread of a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. But, she said she expects to see a reduction in the amount of the dispersant, Corexit, that BP is using.

"In my opinion, we have not yet crossed the line where we should take that tool off the table altogether," Jackson said at a news conference at the Venice Marina, after seeing for the first time oil that has infiltrated marsh near Pass a Loutre.

"We should minimize it," she said of the Corexit, upon which the EPA is conducting toxicity tests. "If I saw today any indication that that material was toxic, if I saw that we were having biodegradation, if I saw data, if I had science that told me that we were having an impact that was worse than allowing this material to just pile up on the surface, then I would stop it."

That said, they need to be banned from ALL "hide thee oil" activities they are engaged in and CLEAN UP the gulf.

7. Hope and Change, y'all
If there's anyone who campaigned for Obama, and after reading this article isn't ready to publicly apologize for their shameless self-delusion, I have a bridge for sale that I'd like to show you. Easy terms and modest down payment, of course.

9. aka, they have run out of the old stuff.
They kept using it because they didn't want to find a way to dispose of it.

Ahh yes, the ocean, the worlds gigantic trash can.

11. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson said Monday the government isn't prepared
Edited on Tue May-25-10 08:36 AM by dgibby
So, when WILL the Govt get prepared? Before or after the Gulf is declared a dead zone?

THIS is the type of response that's causing people to doubt that the Govt is actually in charge.

Contrary to the popular flame bait being posted all over DU, I do NOT expect Obama to dive down to the bottom of the Gulf with a cork in his teeth and singlehandedly stop the oil volcano. I also don't expect him to leap tall buildings in a single bound, stop bullets, or don a cape and fly over the disaster zone.

There are some things he CAN do, however: divide up the responsibilities: let BP continue to concentrate on capping the well, since they (supposedly) have the equipment and expertise for that task.

A. Make cleanup and containment the responsibility of whatever branch of the Govt is best equipped to handle it, with the proviso that all costs will be born by BP.

B.Order the Army Corps of Engineers to EXPEDITE the erection of berms around the wetlands.

C. As for the law that requires BP to fix this mess, either declare the Gulf a National disaster zone and supersede the law or have a little "come to jeebus meeting" with BP, and explain how your going to shut down all their other wells in the Gulf, especially Atlantis, until they agree to the terms as stated above.

More lubricant.
