GOP-linked punk rock ministry says executing gays is ‘moral’
Source: The Minnesota Independent

You Can Run But You Cannot Hide, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit ministry that brings its hard rock gospel into public schools, has been deepening its long-running ties to the Republican Party of Minnesota. Long a cause célèbre for Rep. Michele Bachmann, who has twice lent her name to the group’s fundraising efforts, You Can Run (YCR) had a booth at the GOP convention in April, and the group’s frontman, Bradlee Dean, reports that gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer recently accepted an invitation to visit with him at Dean’s home. But recent controversial statements by Dean — that Muslim countries calling for the execution of gays and lesbians are “more moral than even the American Christians” — have drawn the ire of some both within and outside the party.

“Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America,” Dean said on YCR’s May 15 radio show on AM 1280 the Patriot. “This just shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws. They know homosexuality is an abomination.”

“If America won’t enforce the laws, God will raise up a foreign enemy to do just that,” Dean continued. “That is what you are seeing in America.”

43. I think they just lie.
They pose as "entertainers" providing some message - "don't do drugs" or "don't have sex." But then they advertise for some church meeting at the end, hoping to snare some kids that way. We've never done it, but I've seen other schools that did.

20. It's very common for public schools to allow these kinds of bands to give performances at assemblies
Edited on Tue May-25-10 10:19 AM by Berry Cool
They tell the school that although they play rock music, they are conveying a message of brotherhood and getting along and staying away from drugs. Then they get in, play for the kids, and start in somewhere amidst all the music talking about Jesus and how he is the one true path to salvation.

There was a company in Florida called Young American Showcase that sent several of these bands (not punk rock but mainstream rock) all around the country touring public schools in the '70s and '80s. Each band had the same name: "Free Fare." If you Google "Young American Showcase" and "Free Fare" you can find many first-person accounts of their activities in schools.

One of the Free Fare bands visited my high school in about 1975. Hooked all the kids in with their ability to play decent music and do some funny sketches, then started in with the Jesus lecture.

If I were the principal, I wouldn't let them hoodwink me, or I'd ask them to leave the second they started in with the Jesus stuff. But many, many school principals really don't think separation of church and state is any big deal, and are more than happy to have someone come in and talk Jesus to their students. So long as no one raises a stink, it goes on and on.

Edited to add: IIRC, how they got around any legal issues was by asking to do a brief assembly at the school during school hours in which they just played their music, did some sketches and didn't talk Jesus at all. They did, however, make a pitch for their big Saturday-night concert, also being held at the school. Lots of kids, lured in by the entertaining assembly, would buy tickets for their concert, held during non-school hours...and it was at the concert that they'd start talking Jesus.

32. We had "Freedom Jam" perform at my high school in the 80s
Sounds like the same organization. They were obviously Christian but didn't really do any evangelizing - basic stay in school, stay out of trouble and don't do drugs. A lot of students complained beforehand - the word got out they were a Christian band, and maybe they toned it down. I don't remember any supplemental concert either.

HOWEVER...

The next year the school brought in that evangelist from TBN who got burned really bad in Vietnam to speak to the students and his presentation went a lot farther towards evangelism. Of course, that was the same year that the local Fundamentalist churches banded together to force our school to change its mascot from the "Demons" because it was Satanic.

11. Just look at those tools
What is happening when some little shits like that can go around claiming to be Punk and not get slammed. How these pukes can call themselves Punk with a straight face is funny as hell. It's like when people decided to rip up their $150 designer jeans and pretend to be "grunge" in the 90s.

It's a shame but it was bound to happen. When the fundie assholes decide to pretend to be all "hip" and "rad" and ready to "rap" with the youth of today it's the death knell for the original movement.

I remember back in the 90's when some phony "heavy metal" christers came around say goodbye to popular heavy metal. It probably happened earlier in the 80s when punk as played by the Sex Pistols and Black Flag was becoming a bit too popular and mainstream.

Perhaps again Punk can go back underground where it actually flourishes.

30. Someone else has discovered how to use religion to make money.
Have you got a band that's going nowhere? The answer is simple. Claim to have a Christian message, change the name of the band to something that sounds kinda tough and biblical at the same time, alter the lyrics to throw in a few of the code words now and then, dress like the stereotypical hard rocker, and set up shop. The music doesn't even have to be good as long as you put on a good enough show.

You get the appearance of being respectable and people will pay for your services because you are "doing the Lord's work". Parents will even encourage their children to go to your events because it's a "safe alternative" to that sinful, secular music that they've heard about.

Edited on Tue May-25-10 11:39 AM by Smarmie Doofus
Nazis are nazis and there will always be fringe nuts.

But with the republicanization, privatization and Obamafication of American public schools we have to figure out if this is a growing trend ( sounds like it) and whether the people we have entrusted our public schools with are paying as much attention to this phenomenon as they are to breaking unions, charter-schooling, demonizing teachers, etc.

54. Religious Right Activists Use Wide Variety Of Tactics To Evangelize In The Classroom
November 2009 Featured

Religious Right Activists Use Wide Variety Of Tactics To Evangelize In The Classroom

<snip>

Minnesota – Punk Rock For Jesus?: A Minnesota band that plays punk rock music is under fire for allegedly deceiving public schools by offering an anti-drug program that is laced with fundamentalist Christianity.

The band, called You Can Run But You Cannot Hide, does not mention religion in the material it sends to principals but uses its time in the schools to proselytize.

The Minnesota Independent reports that in 2003, the group came to Benton High School in Wisconsin under false pretences.

“They had a captive audience for their message, and that wasn’t right,” Principal Gary Neis told a local newspaper. Neis later apologized to the students.

In 2005 and 2007, students at public high schools in Arkansas and Minnesota walked out of performances by the band. In both cases, principals said they were unaware the band’s message would be religious.

55. MN GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Tom Emmer Admits Illegal Donation to YCRBYCH
http://minnesotaindependent.com/59337/emmer-campaign-donated-to-you-can-run

The Minnesota House campaign of Rep. Tom Emmer donated to the ministry of You Can Run But You Cannot Hide Intl., Inc., according to the press secretary for Emmer’s gubernatorial campaign. Emmer is one of several Republican leaders involved with the ministry of Bradlee Dean, who leads a hard rock band that brings its message of Jesus Christ into public schools and recently affirmed the practice of Muslim countries executing gays and lesbians.

Minnesota Public Radio reports that Emmer’s campaign has notified the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board about the donation, which exceeded the legal limit by $150.

69. And then they turn around and condemn gangsta rap

for having songs like "Cop Killer" and "Fuck tha Police".

Sheesh! This is religious hypocrisy at its worst! Fundamentalists have been afraid of rock n' roll since Elvis Presley dared to shake his hips on the Ed Sullivan Show. But now that some silly rock band decided to echo the primitive anti-gay thoughts of fools who take Leviticus literally I suppose that Eminem (a rapper who's been accused of homophobia) might as well be a good ol' sterile Christian musician!

Oh well. GIMME THAT CHRISTIAN SIDE HUG! THAT CHRISTIAN SIDE HUG!
