Security increase after Phoenix mayor gets threats

PHOENIX — Phoenix police have beefed up their security detail for Mayor Phil Gordon after he received death threats apparently spurred by his opposition to the state's new immigration law.

Cmdr. Jeff Hynes, who oversees Gordon's security detail, says the mayor has received several specific death threats, and one claimed he would be killed by sniper fire.

The mayor is under round-the-clock surveillance, and The Arizona Republic reports the heightened security includes plainclothes officers outside his north Phoenix home while he sleeps.

Their way of life is coming to an end. It's been an imbalanced system in their favor for a long time, and now that they tanked the economy with their deceptive ways they're getting a microscope up the ass.

No where to run to. Expect some of them to cross the line, and how we respond to it will determine if others will follow their example.

"They" didn't tank the economy. "Our" lavish foolishness tanked the economy. "They" were certainly a part of it, but it goes much broader and deeper than "they".

Personally, I think, so many corporate and government people were out of touch with the idea that we can't afford everything everyone wants, that we spent ourselves into a hole. We didn't set priorities, we just threw money at everything.

Maybe "you" didn't fuck the economy up, but many of the people you are hoping will correct the problem certainly did. A lot of them approved war funding and pork just to hang their own earmarks onto the legislation and score a few $ million for their home district.

Given AZ's rather casual attitude towards people and weapons this has to be a major concern. They're one of three states to allow unlicensed concealed carry and licensed CCW folks can haul their hawg legs with them into bars and restaurants which serve liquor.I'm sure his security detail will be on edge for sometime.An acquaintance claims the wingnut revival in this country has the beneficial effect of letting us know where the worst of them in terms of derangement and numbers are concentrated enabling us to avoid those places.Arizona would seem to be a leader in that respect.

Mr. PHIL GORDON (Mayor, Phoenix): Thank you.

MARTIN: What brings you to Washington at a time like this?

Mr. GORDON: Well, two things. One is to work with the administration as well as the Justice Department and Homeland Security to let them know how urgent it is to have two immediate movements. One is a lawsuit by the Justice Department to intercede and stop this law from going into effect, which would go into effect in 90 days. Number two is, we need immigration reform comprehensive now and that's a legislative push now, ask the president to please bring this to the front burner.

Meeting with the speaker today, with the majority leader and his staff and her staff today that this has to go forward. The potential for violence is great. Our chief has talked about that. People are in fear now, citizens as well as immigrants. The economic harm not only to the city of Phoenix and the state, but now to the nation as a result of this, with national boycotts being called upon. It is just immense. And now is the time.

MARTIN: And the reason I say you're caught in the middle is that you have been, on this program and you've been an outspoken critic of some of law enforcement efforts aimed at undocumented immigrants. I mean, you have been a strong critic of these, particularly those by one particularly well-known sheriff, Joe Arpaio.

On the other hand, you are the mayor of Phoenix and some of your fellow mayors from around the country, as well as a member of the Arizona's delegation, have called for a boycott of the state, but you're against that. Tell us why.
