To prove the point, it launched a first-ever joint initiative with a Manhattan-based company that's researching adult stem cell therapies -- and pledged $1 million in funding to seal the deal.
The Catholic Church and anti-abortion groups oppose stem cell research that is done with embryos, which must be destroyed to collect the stem cells. Adult stem cells come from living, breathing people - which makes all the difference as far as the Vatican is concerned.
"The important dimension of adult stem cell research is based on the fact that it doesn't risk human life," the Rev. Tomasz Trafny of the Pontifical Council for Culture told the Daily News on Tuesday. "This kind of research avoids a number of moral and ethical difficulties that embryonic stem cell research raises."
