Welfare group: Hidden video shows Ohio cows beaten

By MEGHAN BARR
The Associated Press
Tuesday, May 25, 2010; 11:25 PM

CLEVELAND -- An animal welfare group said Tuesday that a graphic video it secretly recorded shows workers at a dairy farm beating cows with crowbars, stabbing them with pitchforks and punching them in their heads.

The video was recorded in an undercover investigation at Conklin Dairy Farms Inc., said Mercy For Animals, a not-for-profit group that publicizes what it calls cruel practices in the dairy, meat and egg industries and promotes a vegan diet.

The video shows workers holding down newborn calves and stomping on their heads. It shows one worker wiring a cow's nose to a metal bar near the ground and repeatedly beating it with another bar while it bleeds.

Conklin Dairy Farms, a fourth-generation family operation based in Plain City, said it takes the care of its cows and calves very seriously and had reviewed the video.

1. Very disturbing and irrational
I cannot figure out the motivation to beat up on your inventory. The cows produce the product of the dairy farm, so why do all this? Its an extreme waste and abuse of needed resources for the farm to continue its viability as a business. So I don't understand why any group of people would do this in a systemic way. I get there are sadists amongst us who get off on hurting living things, but to do this is highly irrational not to mention stupid.

15. ridiculous. I live in the country, lots of cows
no children of the corn. Here's how my neighbors treat their cows:

We have a small herd of registered Ayrshire cows. Ayrshires are a high component breed, their milk is rich in protein and fat. It is the qualities of these components are what sets the breed apart. They produce small fat globules, which break down easily during the ripening process yielding clean predictable flavors. Ayrshires are also the most efficient feed converters of any dairy breed; they are great grazers. They are also quite spoiled. Our cows go out on a fresh piece of pasture after every milking during the spring summer and fall and are fed a ration of dry hay through the winter, when they stay in avoiding harsh winter wind and snow and listen to a great selection of jazz and classical music. We have healthy happy cows producing some of the cleanest sweetest milk in the state of Vermont.

stupid generalization you made.

I have always lived on a farm and have never seen animals treated this way. Granted farmers anthropomorphize animals way less than the general public tends to, but why would a good farmer harm something that is his livelihood? If you are someone who doesn't understand the concept of using some creatures for food please don't move my way, you will be miserable.

17. That's a shame because I my father's family were all farm people and they killed
their chickens quick and humanely. Further, they always had a large hen house and pen for the chickens. I've seen documentaries. Yes, that's shameful (small pens) the way some INDUSTRIES treat fowl as well.

One of the distinguishing traits of a sociopath. That POS in the video should be called out and named.

5. This farm should be shut down. Period.

Tell me they didn't know their cows were being abused. Bull shit. If you can't protect the
animals in your care, then you shouldn't be allowed to own them. The owners should be
thrown in jail, along with the abusers.

lots of tough talk in that video.
They tie up animals and beats them, or put violence upon them while they are caged and talk tough..

wonder how many times someone else could visit a crowbar upside their heads before they started crying for mercy. and may they receive none.

8. I could kill these people & I'd feel no remorse.
They are not human.

Flame away. I'm not coming back to this thread.

I am however writing a letter to the dairy farm. "...it takes the care of its cows and calves very seriously and had reviewed the video." Fucking assholes. If you really cared for the well being of your animals, you'd know how they were being treated. Instead, you hired others to do this work & then went about the "important" business in your lives, never checking back to see how the animals were being treated. Fucking assholes.

:grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

I'm also sending a donation to Mercy for Animals.

12. This is not rational behaviour, nor would I think it anything resembling...
...permissible company policy on a dairy farm.

Stressed cows produce less and far poorer quality milk.

Unless some compelling evidence emerges that this treatment was sanctioned or encouraged, this sort of expose is not much more than a slightly disingenuous version of the ACORN pimp scandal. While nothing is manufactured, the perfect "example" would appear to have been hunted down for propoganda purposes.

By all means use such to take down individual operators that deserve it, but unless it's possible to prove that it's systemic behaviour, it's not a fair cop to hold an entire industry responsible.

Short of watching the video, which I don't have the desire for tonite, the only time I might consider presure from above over a bunch of sick fucks without proper supervision as an explanation, is if the animals were "downers", and their dying on site might significantly affect operations.

is identified as the owner of the farm in the video and the worst piece of shit brags about it while standing near another worker so it does not seem as if it was any kind of secret.

13. I remember the wife's grandparents, dairy farmers of German
decent here in TN. They treated their cows like children and cried for days if one died. Those animals were given every luxury a farmer could afford, including countless loaves of 3-day old bread from the thrift store.
I guess that was back when owners were more invested in their workers / animals and appreciated who was really making the money.

19. They probably are really sick individuals who were severely abused themselves.
Edited on Wed May-26-10 07:03 PM by leftyladyfrommo
I'm not making excuses for them.

I talk to a lot of small farmers who are fighting exactly this kind of image of the whole meat and milk and egg production industry. They are just as disturbed by this sort of thing as other people are. It not only is sickening and disgusting but it makes the whole industry look horrible.

I don't eat animal products any more. I just couldn't get past the immorality. I work with animals all day long. It was just too hypocritical for me to work with them and love them and then eat them for dinner.

The people that ran that operation had to know. How could they not? And they are responsible for the people they hired.

This made the Washington Post and now its all over the internet. That farm will be forced to close. Thank God.

23. Billy Joe Gregg arrested, misdemeanor

http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/welfare-group-hidden-video-shows-ohio-cows-beaten

CLEVELAND - >

Union County Sheriff Rocky Nelson announced Wednesday afternoon that 25-year-old Billy Joe Gregg of Delaware County was arrested and charged with 12 counts of cruelty to animals, a second degree misdemeanor.

Sheriff Nelson said deputies were called to Conklin Dairy Farm at 6 a.m. Wednesday to provide security for an employee termination. After learning the nature of the termination, the sheriff’s office conducted its own investigation and made the arrest.

>>>

Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, issued the following statement:

"The people who committed the sadistic and barbaric cruelty documented by Mercy for Animals at an Ohio dairy should have the book thrown at them. These deeply disturbing attacks against helpless animals should be troubling to anyone with any level of decency. Given the anemic state of Ohio's anti-cruelty laws, it is time for the Legislature to upgrade these statutes so judges and prosecutors have the tools to handle people who engage in malicious cruelty, including to farm animals."

26. Revolting man
I couldn't watch more than about a minute of this. The man is a psychopath, who at best should be behind bars where he can no longer be a threat to animals or humans.

Whilst videos like this are harrowing, I applaud those who make and distribute them. People need to be confronted with the truth. I gave up eating meat a couple of months ago after viewing the videos at meat.org linked from a advert on DU.
