Police chiefs pan Arizona immigration law: Federal lawsuit coming?

US Attorney General Eric Holder met Wednesday with a group of police chiefs, who bolstered Mr. Holder's own criticisms of the Arizona immigration law.

Is US Attorney General Eric Holder going to sue Arizona over its new immigration law? It sure seems as if the Obama administration is preparing the way for such an action.

On Wednesday, a group of police chiefs from around the nation paid a very public visit to Attorney General Holder and said that forcing local law enforcement to check whether a person is in the United States legally could raise a wall of mistrust between police and immigrant groups. The new Arizona immigration law would require police to carry out such checks.

If that happens, their jobs will become more difficult, said the chiefs.

“Laws like this will actually increase crime, not decrease crime,” said Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck.

4. It will result in more dead cops.

Cops rely on information on the community and undocumented migrants often live in areas of high crime. Instead of getting a heads up on a dangerous situation they are going to sit and be quiet.

Why does Brewer hate cops?

5. What group was it?
Was this sponsored by PERF or part of unions or... I hate it when they say a Group but don't say who I can give congrats to. I read or saw someplace that PERF was involved but I can't find anything on it now.

"The Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) is a national membership organization of progressive police executives from the largest city, county and state law enforcement agencies."

6. Police vent to Holder on Arizona immigration law
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Arizona's controversial new immigration law will strain police ties to the community, sap limited law enforcement resources and could lead to an increase in crime, a group of police chiefs told U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Wednesday.

The meeting between Holder and eight police chiefs came as the attorney general is weighing whether to file a legal challenge to the Arizona law, which takes effect on July 29 and would require officers to determine the immigration status of any person they suspect of being in the country illegally.

The Arizona law seeks to drive illegal immigrants from the desert state, the principal corridor for unauthorized migrants entering the country from Mexico, and a busy entry point for Mexican cartels smuggling drugs to a voracious U.S. market.

Critics argue the law is unconstitutional and a mandate for racial profiling.
