Blumenthal still way ahead in poll; Approval rating dips, but McMahon's negatives rise
Source: journal inquirer

Despite the controversy over his false statements that he served in Vietnam, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal leads Linda McMahon 56 percent to 31 percent in the U.S. Senate race, a Quinnipiac University poll released today says.

Blumenthal’s 25-point lead over McMahon has shrunk by eight points since March, though, when he had a 61 percent to 28 percent lead over her in the poll.

“It looks like Connecticut voters forgive Attorney General Richard Blumenthal — or feel that there is nothing to forgive — in the Vietnam service flap,” poll Director Douglas Schwartz said. “While he has taken a hit with voters, his poll numbers were so high to begin with that he still maintains a commanding lead” over McMahon.

1. What surprises me a little is the absence of Palin in this controversy.
I half expected to hear something from her Facebook in terms of "there's nothing worse than someone who lies about be in the military" or more cockeyed. Her MO is kick a dem when s/he is donw.

2. The Hartford Courant's report on the poll results:
Q Poll: Blumenthal trumps McMahon by 25 points; voters shrug off Vietnam matter

By Daniela Altimari on May 27, 2010 6:15 AM

This morning's Q poll shows just how hard it will be for Republicans to win a U.S. Senate seat
in Connecticut. Despite potentially damaging revelations that Democrat Richard Blumenthal misrepresented his military record -- and despite an early and pervasive ad campaign launched by Republican Linda McMahon -- state voters are sticking with Blumenthal.

The attorney general beats McMahon by 25 percentage points, according to the Quinnipiac University poll. That's a drop from the 33 point lead that Blumenthal held over the former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO in the March Q poll, but still a significant lead.

Even more heartening for Blumenthal: Questions about his military record, first raised last week by a New York Times report, don't appear to have hurt him. Sixty one percent of the voters say it doesn't matter to them that Blumenthal misrepresented his service by saying on several occasions that he served in the Vietnam War when in fact he remained stateside.

"It looks like Connecticut voters forgive Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, or feel that there is nothing to forgive in the Vietnam service flap,'' Q Poll director Doug Schwartz said in press release accompanying the poll's release. "While he has taken a hit with voters, his poll numbers were so high to begin with that he still maintains a commanding lead over Linda McMahon.''

4. Did this article manage to get posted somewhere here??? It's pretty clear that
the NY Times screwed up, blew this out of proportion, etc.

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/feature/2010/05/26/new_york_times_blumenthal_omission

"But simply by not reporting even the most decisive exculpatory evidence, Times reporters sustained the world's longest political shaggy-dog story for years. Editors stonewalled; critics became enemies. Timid "mainstream" media followed like puppies. It's an old story.

Back to l'affaire Blumenthal. Fully 23 paragraphs into the Times story, readers learn that during a televised Senate debate last March, Blumenthal was asked about possible war with Iran. "Although I did not serve in Vietnam," he said, "I have seen firsthand the effects of military action, and no one wants it to be the first resort." His campaign supplied the video."
