Democrats Say Bush Abuses Power in Slamming Critic
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=615&ncid=716&e=14&u=/nm/20040323/pl_nm/security_bush_dc

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats on Tuesday accused the White House of election-year "abuses of power" in trying to discredit former top U.S. counter-terrorism official Richard Clarke, who has accused President Bush (news - web sites) of ignoring threats from al Qaeda before the Sept. 11 attacks.

Democrats took to the Senate floor to lambaste the Bush White House, which had fiercely condemned Clarke on Monday.

"We are seeing abuses of power that cannot be tolerated. The president needs to put a stop to it right now. We need to get to the truth and the president needs to help us do that," Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota said.

Clarke specifically accused Bush of paying insufficient attention to the al Qaeda threat before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and thereafter focusing on Iraq (news - web sites) at the expense of efforts to crush the Islamic militant group.

2. an excellent statement by Daschle
We are indeed seeing abuses of power that cannot be tolerated.
The onus is on Bush to counter his well earned opprobrium.

8. That is what I meant

Someone at DU reminded me that with the Rebub controlled Congress, there is no chance that he could be impeached.

That said, where would the words "abuse of power" get us?
What are the possible consequences if a President is charged with "abuse of power?"

11. Bush saying he was briefed on a regular basis about terrorist threats..
and if they had known something was going to happen on 9/11/01 they
would have done something about it is a little like saying "I am not a
completely incompetent idiot, so stop saying that!"

Having to defend himself on such a basic level doesn't look good for him. A
president should not have to defend his basic ability to function.
