36. He voted for Obama, or so he said.
Edited on Sat May-29-10 01:43 PM by No Elephants
Claimed he had voted Republican originally because he read that, if a Party--any Party--has been in power over 20 years, it's your duty to oust them. (I forgot who Hopper said had written that, but, IIRC, it was an impressive person.)

56. Interesting article about his passing the other day in the LA Times. He
was 97 and had very optimistically booked a speaking gig for his hundredth birthday. Not fond of his politics, but I certainly remember his House Party shows and the enjoyment he got out of those interviews with little kids.

Never knew he was born in Canada and adopted by an elderly couple or that besides losing his daughter to her suicide, he lost one son to a car crash and another to illness at age 70.

40. I'm sure he's not on that chopper considering he disavowed
the lifestyle associated with liberal ideas and the 1960's social mentality. He also had an admitted feud with Peter Fonda regarding the money Easy Rider made. He was and excellent actor.
Too bad he supported an administration that tortured and murdered innocent people.

When was he not all crazy?

He made real fictional characters that were even more crazy that those I knew in real life. I just re-watched a couple of scenes from Blue Velvet. Just his look watching Dean Stockwell mime "In Dreams" has so much emotion.

But he also turned into a raging Republican douchebag in the latter years of his life, supporting both Bush presidencies. It ruined whatever real respect I had for the man, but I still respect him as an actor.

38. He did support Obama, though
But politics doesn't affect how I view performers, if I'm a fan of their work. Case in point is Robert Duvall, a brilliant actor who has some twisted views of the world. And Michael Caine is a hardcore conservative Tory supporter.

39. Cancer is one ruthless motherfucker of a disease.
Edited on Sat May-29-10 01:44 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
My dad died from cancer, but it was "multiple myeloma"...bone marrow cancer...and by the time they diagnose you with that particular form of the disease, you are a dead man walking (he died a month after the diagnosis). It is not considered "treatable." But the doctor put him through a round of chemo anyway. My mom went nuclear on him, and rightfully so..."Why did you put him through that when you KNEW it wouldn't do any good?"

Oh well...he got paid, so that's something positive, right?

:sarcasm:

And for the record, the doctor DID admit that the chemo was a one in a million shot at doing anything other than making my dad puke his guts up.

I've been a Dennis Hopper fan for most of my life, and my sadness at his passing is mixed with a sense of relief that his suffering is over.

There are a lot of ways to die. Cancer shouldn't be one of them, but it is.

R.I.P., Dennis.

I always enjoyed Hopper's work and Ron Silver's. Lyle Lovett played at the 2001 inaugural, and I recently read that Chris Hillman, whose music I have loved for 45 years, is a supporter of the Traditional Values Coalition. Heartbreaking.

67. Spent a lot of time here in NC, particularly Wilmington
His politics were all over the place, depending upon the period in his life, most recently had moved back towards the Dem side of the world. He seemed to be more attracted to the dark side when he was relatively sober and somewhat drug free.

Blue Velvet is certainly in the running as one of the strangest movies ever filmed in NC (or most anywhere else, for that matter). While filming BV, Hopper bought his first property in Wilmington and became quite active in developing training programs for actors and trades.

His many wives and their other spouses make for a really interesting collection with strange connections all over the place.

When I heard last year that he had advanced prostate cancer it hit home, I had just had surgery for state 3 PC. Let this be a reminder to all of you -- get your PSA tested and PM me before you go for watchful waiting.

The strangest comment I ever heard anyone make about Dennis Hopper was "He seemed so different in McCloud." They were totally clueless, I started to explain, and realized there was no way I could explain Dennis Hopper to this lady.

"Born to be wild"

<snip>

"I voted for Bush, father and son, but this time I'll vote for Obama," he told journalists at the opening of a show on his life and work.

"I was the first person in my family to have been Republican," he added. "For most of my life I wasn't on the left."

"I pray God, Barack Obama is elected," he said, calling the current administration's many "lies."

"Dennis Hopper: I Voted For Obama Because Of Palin (VIDEO)"

"Hopper said that he had been a Republican since Reagan, but the choice Sarah Palin pushed him over the edge and he voted for Barack Obama instead. He then told a lovely anecdote of Obama saying kind words to him about his mother's death once."

Video of Hopper on the view.

85. YW :)
:hi:

That movie was really influential for me and that's one if my very favorite scenes from it. I know everybody always went gaga over Fonda's Captain America bike but I always liked Hoppers Billy bike better. So much so that I had a bike I owned in the 80s painted in a similar paint scheme. It wound up looking quite a bit like Hopper's bike but it was a shovel rather than a pan. I wish I would have kept it now.

83. He was always a favorite.
I loved his last series called Speed. You could notice his health decline.

That one movie where he was a lawman and held a gal captive in his basement --- oh that was scary!

He was one of my very favorite actors. RIP!

That was one of my favorite movies.
Man, he was in tons of great movies.
A whole bunch that were favorites of mine.
I haven't seen all of the movies he was in yet, though.
Now I get to watch him act after he has passed over to the other side.

Put in a good word for me, Dennis.
You rocked the world while you walked upon the face of the earth!!

94. his career was wide spanning..
You can turn on a wide variety of films and find Dennis Hopper is in it. Alot of times you'll see him in a movie and say "I didn't know Dennis Hopper was in this."
