UN Drops Gay Civil Rights
(London) A move to add sexuality to the list of categories protected by the United Nations has been dropped in the midst of intense pressure from the Vatican and Muslim nations.

It is the second year in a row that the motion has been withdrawn at the Geneva-based UN Commission on Human Rights. The proposal had been put forward by Brazil and supported by Canada and most of the European Union states.

2. Muslim Fundamentalists are no friends of gay rights
On that issue they share similarities with our own American Religious Right.

I applauded the collapse of the Taliban because of thier treatment of women, religious minorities and gays. No good liberal should make excuses for that despicable, evil regime.

3. From bad to worse
Now young women are immolating themselves in protest against the warlords and the Northern Alliance. 4 in one week a couple of weeks ago. Women now are regularly raped if they appear in town without a every inch of their body covered. From all accounts it's gotten worse. I got the feeling from riverbend this week, that it is getting worse in Iraq; she said she went into town and noted the absence of women, and she felt extremely uncomfortable because she didn't have her head covered, it will be either another Iran, or we will occupy for the next 20 years. http://www.riverbendblog.blogspot.com

8. As a good liberal, I think it's unfortunate that the Taliban....
...is making a comeback in Afghanistan. I wasn't sure that a full-scale invasion of Afghanistan was the best next step in the War on Terror (TM), but tried to look on the good side.

Surely, with enough aid from us & the international community, Afghanistan could make progress in all these areas?

Hasn't happened, though.
