Four teenage friends were arrested Wednesday for torching the home of a Mexican family over the Fourth of July weekend by intentionally shooting off a fireworks device from a moving car, Suffolk police and law enforcement sources said.
"There is no question from the evidence that we have reviewed, the statements that some of the defendants have given us, that they targeted this particular house because there were Mexicans living" there, said Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota, announcing the arrests Thursday in Brentwood.

Ramirez, however, said the attack underscored how militant anti-immigrant groups in Farmingville have created an environment of hatred that fostered the attack. "What we are seeing is what happens when you plant the seeds of hate, and we all know who planted them," he said.
Patrick Young, head of the Long Island Immigrant Alliance, an immigrant advocacy group, concurred. "I doubt any Long Islanders are shocked that it happened in that community because it came after years of violent, racially hateful language coming from an organized group in Farmingville, the Sachem Quality of Life," which contends Mexicans are trying to reconquer the United States, Young said.
