Dems say recall could disenfranchise (poor and minority) voters
Associated Press

Democratic Party leaders warned Thursday the Oct. 7 recall election against Gov. Gray Davis could result in Florida- style problems of disenfranchising poor and minority voters, a contention dismissed by recall supporters. ---

"What I fear is what happened to us in Florida when many black and Latino voters were denied the right to vote because of mix- ups," said California Democratic Party Chairman Art Torres. ---

Counties, including Los Angeles County, the state's most populous, are eliminating polling places to save money. In Los Angeles County there were 5,000 polling places in the last countywide election but there will be about half that in the special election, officials said.

"This election may very well be invalidated" because people do not have access to voting booths, Torres said. ---

3. Then change the CA constitution
Now is the time before the constitution party prevents it from changing. Are constitutions not living documents?

2. I am shocked and surprised...
...that an action taken by Republicans would disenfranchise voters other than white male property owners.

4. Aren't the California election officers democrats ?
Assuming the officials do their duty there is no reason any citizen should be disenfranchised in their right to vote for or against the removal of Gov. Davis.

Beyond that, to raise the spectre of Florida as a boogyman against the recall election is a little late. I gather it can't be stopped now. It's merely a question of the election results.
