China Slams Pentagon Report on Threat to Taiwan
BEIJING (Reuters)

China denounced Friday a Pentagon report accusing it of deploying growing numbers of ballistic missiles aimed at Taiwan and said Washington was making excuses to sell advanced weapons to the island.

"The motive is to foment public opinion and excuses to sell advanced weapons to Taiwan," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement when asked to comment on the Pentagon's annual report on Chinese military might. "The Chinese side expresses its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition." ---

3. In addition, there is considerable consternation in Washington

that China's Economy continues to flourish, and that China
refuses to heed directives with regard to rmb. Of Guns and
Butter, China has wisely chosen Butter, and that will
continue to be a Top Priority.

4. China has too much to lose
Edited on Fri Aug-01-03 11:27 AM by Cush
If they attacked Taiwan (economically)

And besides, the majority their military equipment is still outdated. Sure they have a few of the newer Russian jets (Su 27s), but they have no way to replace them....unless they buy them.

6. Not outdated--, just in progress, e.g.

Su-30MK2 and Su30-MK3 attack fighters which were contracted for
in late 2002, as well as the J-10. The Type094 Song class nuclear
powered attack sub which is based on Type093, but these will not
be in service for 10 years.
