Hayward council voices opposition to USA Patriot Act
By Michelle Meyers, STAFF WRITER
HAYWARD -- The city has joined 138 other local governments in passing a resolution that opposes at least part of the USA Patriot Act.
A group of passionate defenders of civil liberties who showed up to encourage the City Council to approve the resolution at its Tuesday night meeting wound up preaching to the choir: The council approved it unanimously, enthusiastically and without a bit of hesitation.
"Attorney General (John) Ashcroft scares the heck out of me," Mayor Roberta Cooper said. "We all have to be in this to save our democracy. (President) Bush was not elected by the people, but by the Supreme Court."
The resolution, drafted by the Library Commission after months of debate and study, opposes a portion of the federal act that makes it easier for federal agencies to search library records and monitor computer use. (snip/...)
