Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney in 'hang Barack Obama' gaffe
Edited on Sun May-01-11 07:50 AM by lanlady
Source: Metro.co.uk

The former governor of Massachusetts is regarded by many Republicans as the safest choice for their party's nomination for next year's election, despite Donald Trump, Sarah Palin and Tea Party darling Michele Bachmann continuing to dominate the headlines.

Mr Romney finally managed to attract some media attention with a speech at a dinner hosted by pressure group Americans for Prosperity, but it was publicity he could have done without.

He suggested the Republicans should follow the example of Ronald Reagan's attacks on Jimmy Carter in 1980 by using the 'misery index' to highlight the economic problems faced by Americans, but expressed the idea in unfortunate terms.

'We're going to have to hang the Obama Misery Index around his neck,' said Mr Romney.

1. Ooooooohhhh. What an unfortunate use of words. I am constantly surprised
lately at how MANY intelligent, worldly white men and women just don't get the African American thing. I don't think Romney meant the analogy this calls up in our minds, but you would think it would've occurred to him and his speech writers, if they had ever given ANY thought to the history of blacks in this country.

3. I think he meant for the far right to see it as code, for the far left to see it as Freudian
and for the center to excuse it away as a poor choice of (innocent) words.

Romney knows he can't please the left, wants to satisfy the right, and needs to win the center.

4. Mitt's wife, during the senate run against Kennedy, said West Roxbury
was the nice part of Roxbury. Anybody from Boston will understand the racism behind that.

each separate neighborhoods of Boston. You'd think a Governor's wife would know that, esp. since the State House is in Boston.

6. Oh, Nonsense
That is most likely not at all what Romney meant. Aren't you familiar with Coleridge "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"?

Ah ! well a-day ! what evil looks
Had I from old and young !
Instead of the cross, the Albatross
About my neck was hung.

Speaking of things people didn't learn in school and weren't intellectually curious enough to research...

I'm not going to deny that there's subtle (and not so subtle) racism in some of the criticism/opposition to Barack Obama, but I don't think that's what's happening in this case.

10. the OP should include the other quote to be clear
When I first read this, I thought...oh there's nothing here, because the OP only has this quote:

"We're going to have to hang the Obama Misery Index around his neck"

Now that's probably a poor choice of words, but it's a stretch to say that could be tied to lynchings.

BUT

The next quote is much more revealing and Romney knew it immediately:

"Housing foreclosures and bankruptcies and higher taxation, we're going to hang him with that."

Mr Romney then appeared to realise what he had said and stopped mid-sentence, before adding: 'So to speak - metaphorically. You have to be careful these days.'

His PR team moved quickly to try to minimise the damage and told media outlets the remarks had nothing to do with President Obama being black and insisted any suggestion to the contrary would be an exaggeration.

17. Romney realized the impact of his words...
and his flippant "...have to be careful..." with a slight twist of the mouth and the audience's reaction (laughs) are very telling...

that was not a humorous moment for anyone that respects history

16. In 2003-04, Romney lied about having marched with MLK, Jr. and also about his own reaction to
learning the Mormon Church had ended one of its racist policies.

He said he had been on his way to Harvard, heard it on the radio, then pulled his car over and cried. I googled when I read the story. He had been graduated from Harvard a year or two earlier.

Anything's possible, but, IMO, if you and your parents believed in the Mormon Church enough to wear the underwear all your life, do the missionary stint and so on, then you and your parents also believed in the Mormon Church enough to have grown up racist because that was church policy then. And growing up racist dies hard. If I am being unfair to Romney on that, I am sorry.

And, we know for sure, Romney grew up a damned liar who'd say anything--and everything-- to get elected.

20. It is important that Democrats NOT lose that thread ....
that connects today's 'misery' to yesterday's GOP rule ...

2 years is NOT enough time to turn around an economy destroyed by conservative policies ..... especially when the Democratic President has to deal with a stodgy Senate and an opposition House ...

One thing you can say about the Democrats, however .... Rarely do they fail to let a REAL opportunity to blame the actual perpetrators of this horrid mess to slip through their fingers ...

How long will it be before the Democrats bow down and admit the whole thing has been their fault ? :sarcasm:

I'm sure he just mean it in the "albatross around the neck" way, but he should not be so stupid to not have realized that it could have been taken the wrong way, idiot.
