Bush Home Buzzing After Bin Laden Killing
Source: CBS DFW

DALLAS (AP) – Flag-waving supporters left flowers and patriotic red, white and blue balloons outside the Dallas home of former President George W. Bush Monday in the hours that followed the U.S.-led mission that killed Osama bin Laden.

“Thank you President Bush,” said a sign left on the gate outside the street leading to the secluded Bush residence.

19. Washington Post in 2002: U.S. Concludes Bin Laden Escaped at Tora Bora Fight
The Bush administration has concluded that Osama bin Laden was present during the battle for Tora Bora late last year and that failure to commit U.S. ground troops to hunt him was its gravest error in the war against al Qaeda, according to civilian and military officials with first-hand knowledge.

Intelligence officials have assembled what they believe to be decisive evidence, from contemporary and subsequent interrogations and intercepted communications, that bin Laden began the battle of Tora Bora inside the cave complex along Afghanistan's mountainous eastern border. Though there remains a remote chance that he died there, the intelligence community is persuaded that bin Laden slipped away in the first 10 days of December.

C.I.A. Closes Unit Focused on Capture of bin Laden

Published: July 4, 2006
WASHINGTON, July 3 — The Central Intelligence Agency has closed a unit that for a decade had the mission of hunting Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenants, intelligence officials confirmed Monday.

The unit, known as Alec Station, was disbanded late last year and its analysts reassigned within the C.I.A. Counterterrorist Center, the officials said.

The decision is a milestone for the agency, which formed the unit before Osama bin Laden became a household name and bolstered its ranks after the Sept. 11 attacks, when President Bush pledged to bring Mr. bin Laden to justice "dead or alive."

The realignment reflects a view that Al Qaeda is no longer as hierarchical as it once was, intelligence officials said, and a growing concern about Qaeda-inspired groups that have begun carrying out attacks independent of Mr. bin Laden and his top deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri.

6. so, apparently,
even though the sept. 11 attack happened when bush was president, it was really clinton's fault, and even though obama has been president for over 2 years when osama was killed it was thanks to bush.

My brain feels a little crooked in my skull when i try to look at how repubs/baggers see the world!!

13. You've got it!
ESPECIALLY since we've not been asked to pay one dime of what it's cost to wage war for a decade! The only consequence we've been asked to contend with is the outrageous tab that's been run up - mostly on a war that was pursued where Bin Laden WASN'T! :dunce:

32. riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight
I mean 8 months on the job (excluding the record # of vacation days for a President) just ain't enough time to wade through all the evidence and warnings from Richard Clarke and others. Maybe after a year or so one could start to take some responsibility for what goes on on your watch, but 8 months? Yeah, Clinton was still operating behind closed doors. (yuk yuk yuk)

38. Then there was Iraq
"Then there was Iraq. In late November, Donald Rumsfeld told Franks that Bush “wants us to look for options in Iraq.” Rumsfeld instructed the general to “dust off” the Pentagon’s blueprint for an Iraq invasion and brief him in a week’s time. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Richard Myers would later write, “I realized that one week was not giving Tom and his staff much time to sharpen” the plan. Franks points out in his autobiography that his staff was already working seven days a week, 16-plus hours a day, as the Tora Bora battle was reaching its climax. Although Franks doesn’t say so, it is impossible not to wonder if the labor-intensive planning ordered by his boss for another major war was a distraction from the one he was already fighting.

Franks briefed Rumsfeld and other top Pentagon officials about the war plan for Iraq on December 4. But both men agreed that the plan needed work. Rumsfeld gave Franks and his staff eight days to revise it. “Well, General,” he told Franks, “you have a lot of work ahead of you. Today is Tuesday. Let’s get together again next Wednesday.”"
