Inquiry sought into D.C. test scores
Source: USA Today

Former D.C. Public Schools chancellor Michelle Rhee is criss-crossing the country, establishing her profile as a national education leader.

...

Yet as she pushes efforts to assess teachers based partly on their students' test scores, parents and teachers in the nation's capital are calling for a federal investigation of high scores during Rhee's tenure.

More than 3,700 teachers and parents are petitioning the U.S. Department of Education and the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate.

The petition follows a USA TODAY investigation that found 103 schools — more than half of D.C.'s public schools — with unusually high rates of wrong answers erased and changed to right ones on student tests from 2008 through 2010, while Rhee was schools chief.

The more that is learned about Rhee's background, the more her "success" looks completely fabricated.

1. Beats me how teacher and administrator cheating is her fault.
Should she have assumed they have no integrity?

2. 103 schools, more than half, is systemic not isolated
Systemic investigations should include the person at the top. In this case, it would be an inquiry into deliberately falsifying student results to show that he program works.

The school I formerly taught at is caught up in this, as is the principal. DC is not pretty right now.

4. As an observer watching the profession my opinion has gotten worse and worse.
All this dirty laundry is depressing.

Thanks to all the educators for exposing what really goes on. I'm beginning to think either our students or our teachers just don't have what it takes to compete with the more disciplined cultures.

6. It's not about teachers. I lived in some of those "more disciplined"
cultures. It's about parents and grandparents and homes and how well or poorly disciplined the families of the students are.

A teacher cannot accomplish much in a classroom of 35 children ten of whom are unruly, disobedient and spoiled.

How many American children stay up late watching TV or playing video games or talking and texting on their I-phones at night, wake up in the morning late, unrested and irritable, are driven to school without breakfast or an affectionate goodbye?

How many of them are angry and rebellious long before they get to first grade?

How many of them live in houses or apartments where there is order, where they are permitted to just leave their toys where they dropped them, where the beds are never made, where the dishes are never done and put away, where the family members do not eat meals together, where mom and dad are too busy to talk, much less take a walk or go to a ballgame together?

How many American children are unwanted once they enter the terrible twos and begin to develop real personalities?

Just try dealing with a classroom with a few of those children in it. It takes the patience of Job.

I tried it when I was a student teacher -- many years ago before the great decline of culture had taken hold as it has today. It's so tough.

3. HER classes also showed the same erasures....
and she lied about her scores...then became the head of it all and then everyone started erasing and lying. It helped NOBODY buy her pretty much.
