Sony tells Congress Anonymous might be responsible for massive PlayStation hack
Source: Raw Story

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) does not know who stole nearly 75 million customers' credit card numbers from their PlayStation and Sony Online services, but they claim to have a hunch.

In an open letter to members of the U.S. House Subcomittee on Commerce Manufacturing and Trade, the chairman of SCEA claimed that forensic researchers have discovered a file that was "planted" on their systems by hackers.

He told Congress the document only contained a single sentence: Titled "Anonymous," it read, "We are legion."

That is indeed an Anonymous catch-phrase, but it is not entirely clear whether this can be blamed on the group, one of its members or someone trying to make it appear as if they were involved.

1. More stonewalling from Sony...it's bullshit, Anonymous has said it's bullshit..
...but still Sony trot it out as an excuse for their blatant disregard for the privacy of their customer's information...

Sony and Tepco are behaving the exact same way, delay, delay, delay, and when confronted with the truth only THEN admit the problem is worse than you originally said, but say you only just found out how bad it was yesterday...then make vague promises about when it will be fixed...

Double fuck BOTH companies...:grr:

3. Anonymous is not a group
Anyone can call themselves anonymous and attack anyone they want. This is the problem with groups like "anonymous", they can not control the people who use their code name.

6. No kidding, the Sony breaches don't follow Anon's MO... they do follow the RBNs though....
Edited on Fri May-06-11 09:04 AM by apnu
This is the same old data breaches we've seen at credit card companies, banks and the like. Plain and simple. The only twist here is Sony trying to blame Anon and play the victim when they're the damn fools who had a unpatched, unprotected Apache server out there with confidential customer information just waiting to be picked up.

Assholes. I'll never buy a Sony product again.

on edit...

For those who don't know, the RBN is the Russian Business Network. Check them out, they're scary.

2. there is nothing in Anon's history to indicate any interest in this sort of hacking....

Stealing user acct information? That sounds like the antithesis of Anon's collective philosophy. If the hack targeted Sony corporate emails or the like, perhaps. But this sounds more like a smoke screen to me, frankly.

4. LOL, what the hell for???
If the Government is hacking SCEA, I think they need to find something more vital to do, that is a fucking waste of time and our money.

9. Meanwhile, everyone else tells Congress that SCEA is responsible.
Poor security and a lack of due care.
