Third attack against Sony planned
Source: CNET

May 5, 2011 4:36 PM PDT

A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.

An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.

Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General, a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan.

Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites, including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers.

1. The hackers should consider laying off on Sony
if this story is true atleast for a bit, after all its one thing to attack once or twice but a 3rd time they could well tick off to many of the people who play Sony games by disrupting their gaming causing more of those people than they might want to turn against them.

7. Whoever did this was clever to leave obvious clues pointing to Anonymous.

It shows a strong understanding of the natures of Sony, the Government, and Anonymous. The clueless bogons in the media won't think to question the fact that anyone could leave a flat text file saying "We are Legion", the catchphrase of everyones' favorite super-seekrit club. The authorities hate Anonymous at the moment due to their association with Wikileaks since they do not understand how Anonymous works, and there's no way for Anon to begin to defend themselves since they are a huge unruly mob with no central leadership and no membership roll.

The hackers gave the government a good reason to go after Anon, they gave Sony someone else to blame for their crisis -- covering for their failure in hiring computer illiterate morons to run their security, and the hackers get a nice long lead time to launder their profits and cover their tracks.

Evilly brilliant.

10. Speaking as one of those "computer illiterate morons" that Sony hired...
It's not that they hire unqualified people, quite the contrary. The problem at Sony--and every other company I've worked for--is quite simply that management does not pay any attention when employees point out problems. As an IT worker, or in any other field for that matter, you learn real quick to keep your head down and your mouth shut.

Since it is impossible in the mind of a manager to measure something that hasn't happened--disaster averted--they can't see any reason to spend money on squishy stuff like network security. It usually takes a multi-million dollar kick in the head before they notice. And even then, all they want to do is make sure the last thing that happened doesn't happen again.

12. I have to agree...
Unfortunately, this is commonplace in most companies. From my experience, management is oblivious to things like SQL Injection and XSS attacks.

11. At the end of the day, what purpose does this serve?
if they wanted or cared about public opinion, which they obviously don't, anonymous would attack goldman sacks.

but instead they go after a game/electronics corp that provides gewgaws for the vapid.
