Hawaii to receive more than $47 million in Title I education money
Source: Hawaii News Now

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii will receive more than $47 million in Title I education money in the coming school year to help pay for programs at schools where a disproportionate number of students live in some form of poverty.

Hawaii will receive $47,810,387 in Title I Education dollars for the 2011-2012 school year, an increase of $5,211,565 from the $42,598,822 received for the 2010-2011 school year.

In Hawaii more than 80,000 public school kids live at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The total number of Hawaii public schools eligible for Title I money has increased to 186 from 161 in 2008.

Title I money is given to schools where children living in households at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty level exceed 40 percent of total enrollment.

1. I'd say there's a 50% chance
that one of the right wing slobberers accuses Obama of favoring Hawaii because of this.

2. More than 50% I'd say.
"Here's Hawaii's payoff for supporting the Obama birth certificate lie." :sarcasm:
Watch for it...it's coming.

8. Do we have any proof Hawaii is even a state?
I demand to see its Certificate of Statesmanship.

Until then, I can only assume it's still a territory of Kenya.

3. Public schools in Hawaii are pitifully underfunded.
The schools have such a terrible reputation because of their neglect. On the other hand, the three major private schools in Hawaii, Kamehameha, Iolani, and Punahou, consistently rank as some of the top schools in the country. In Hawaii, if you want your kid to get a good education, plan on paying for private schooling.

I think it is great that Hawaii Public Schools will be receiving more funding. I only hope that the massive bureaucracy that exists in the government there does not misappropriate or misuse much of these funds. In my opinion, the entire system there needs an overhaul.

7. Cost of living in Hawaii is ~15 percent above mainland average, and salaries 15 percent *below.*

Since practically everything they buy has to be shipped thousands of miles, the rising cost of gas means their already outrageous prices on everything are skyrocketing now.

Their schools serve a population with tremendous needs, and the need is growing as communities become more stressed. It is a shame this move will be politicized. We need to politicize it right back.
