TOKYO—Sony Corp. is unlikely to meet the deadline it had set to restore the PlayStation Network, keeping millions of irritated videogamers offline for another weekend as the company continues to conduct internal safety checks to defend a new system against hackers.
The setback comes on the same day Sony said it removed the personal information of 2,500 sweepstakes participants posted unbeknownst to the company on a website affiliated with Sony Electronics. The information was discovered as part of the ongoing intrusions into the company's system, but the data listed did not include individuals' credit-card information, according to a statement released Saturday.
A Sony spokesman said Saturday the PlayStation Network will most likely not be back online over the weekend, a step back from its announcement May 1 when executives said they were aiming to get parts of the service back up within the week, while a full system reboot would take until the end of the month.
He declined to specify a new timeframe when the system can be expected to be back online.
