Second Killer Suspected in Long Island Attacks
Source: The New York Times

Long Island residents, already grappling with the notion that a serial killer has been killing and dumping bodies in their midst, got more disturbing news on Monday: there may be a second serial killer at work.

Since April, law enforcement authorities have been trying to determine if four bodies discovered in the thick, beachfront brush on Jones Beach Island were also the work of the killer believed responsible for the deaths of four prostitutes whose remains were found nearby in December.

But officials in Suffolk County said Monday that the killings involving two of the more recently discovered victims — while unconnected to the first four bodies — “appear to be related to each other.” The officials said one of the recent bodies had been identified as belonging to Jessica Taylor, 20, who had worked as a prostitute in Washington and briefly in New York before disappearing in July 2003.

Soon after she was missing, most of her body, absent her head and hands, was discovered by a woman walking her dog off Halsey Manor Road in Manorville, about 45 miles east of the Gilgo Beach area, where her other remains were found on March 29.

1. I know these instances are quite rare...
and our impressions are impacted by the mass media coverage, but it is hard not to wonder how many really sick serial killers might be out there. Not to mention what might be creating them....sigh...

2. I always suspect someone like a Jeffery Deaver or
Michael Connelly has slipped a cog and started living out one their own novels. You have to wonder how they make these things up.

Hey, that might make a best selling book!

3. Many more than you imagine. Many
years ago I worked at the Payne Whitney Clinic in N.Y. I was amazed at the crimes committed by all socio economic groups.

5. one of those girls
was from Maine.

(NECN) - Four bodies have been found along a remote beach on Long Island in New York. Investigators believe it could be the work of a serial killer.

The bodies were found near the area where 22-year-old Megan Waterman of Maine went missing last summer.

Lost and Missing, Inc., an organization that has been working with her family, spoke with Waterman's mother today, as well as police in Scarborough, Maine, and they confirmed that investigators will be running a DNA sample to determine whether Waterman's body is among the remains.

Investigators believe one of the other bodies may be that of a missing young woman from New Jersey. Both women advertised as escorts on Craigslist.
