GOP litmus test: Sharia opposition
Source: Politico

As potential GOP candidates jockey to distinguish themselves heading into primary season, there seems to be at least one issue on which they widely agree: Sharia law is a continuing threat to the United States.

Invoking Sharia and casting it as a growing danger at odds with American principles has become a rallying cry for conservatives. It’s also quickly becoming an unlikely pet issue among 2012 presidential contenders: Potential candidates have almost unilaterally assailed the Islamic code, making it as much a staple of the campaign stump speech as economic reform, job creation and rising gas prices.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann responded to Osama bin Laden’s death not just by praising the U.S. military. She used the news to remind her followers about a threat she considers alive and well.

“A time to express our deepest gratitude to the U.S. military for taking out Osama bin Laden,” Bachmann tweeted. Expanding on her tweet on Facebook, she wrote, “Osama bin Laden dead! May this be the beginning of the end of Sharia-compliant terrorism.”

3. i wonder what version of sharia law they are afraid of?
since the islamic world has different interpretations of sharia i think these people should clarify which version they are ranting about. another problem that i see is some interpretations are close to the radical christian right`s view of their world.the world they want to force others to abide in.

actually i`m more afraid of those hasidic jews than those sharia law muslims.did you see what they did to hillary? :sarcasm:

15. All fundamentalists of any religion are essentially identical.
I'm sure if they read Sharia law they'd probably start adopting it on the sly.

19. It's actually the most stupid litmus test they could possibly come up with.
It only calls attention to their own form of "sharia," namely Christian Reconstructionism, which is a much bigger threat to America than Islamic sharia could ever be. It's proponents are very wealthy (or duped by the very wealthy) and very powerful, and they have been operating under the radar for decades to impose their version of "biblical law" on an unwilling and for the most part unwitting population.

Since the 2010 election they are less under the radar and more overt about their theocratic agenda. There's a kind of desperation about it, as though they sense this is their last chance before the inevitable backlash. In any case these are the very LAST people who should be making a stink about religious law of any kind. It would be so easy for progressives to throw their sharia scare tactics right back in their teabagging faces.

Not trying to pick an argument, understand. But I felt that, up until a few years ago, Politico was reasonably fair.

6. For a group that says they love the Constitution so much ...
.... they know precious little about it. The 1st amendment already has this Sharia thing covered.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,
or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Yes it does. Under Sharia law, blasphemy is a crime. Under the 1st amendment, blasphemy is protected free speech.

26. They don't love the Constitution. Don't kid yourselves.
All they care about are "nothing but gold or silver coin will be accepted in payment of debts," the Second Amendment, and some of them really like the 18th Amendment (they're not so hot on the 21st Amendment, though).

about the Yellow Meatloaf that's been stalking this country.

Let the republicans worry about the encroachment of Sheria Law. That way the Americans can concern themselves with real problems.

17. Article VI, paragraph 3 of the US Constitution
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.

Making opposition to Sharia law a requirement to hold office would violate the US and most state constitutions.

18. Argument will be that they are against Sharia "law" so the Constitutional
prohibition for no "religious" test does not apply. What they failed to see was someone making a comparison between Sharia law and the right wings positions and discredit them with their own stated intentions and similarity to Sharia law. In other words, "out" them as part of the American version of the Taliban.

22. LOL, it's funny, I am opposed to private religious courts, but this BS is just shit-stirring.
I would not be opposed to laws banning all private courts based on religious laws, but this Sharia-specific crap is all about scaring the nuts to the polls.
