Mitch Daniels 'Would Like To' Run For President, Top Adviser Says
Source: Huffington Post

WASHINGTON – Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels wants to run for president and is not in the process of convincing himself to do it, a close adviser said. The last hurdle remaining is ongoing discussions between him and his wife, Cheri Daniels, over whether she is ready to face questions about their past.

“I think he would like to do it,” the Daniels adviser told The Huffington Post by phone. “I actually think he’d have a decent chance of getting the nomination.”

The insight from a source close to the governor contradicts many of the reports that have focused on whether Daniels will run or not. Daniels has been portrayed -- and has in some ways portrayed himself -- as a reluctant potential candidate, someone who had hoped the GOP would find someone else to be their standard-bearer but is unimpressed with the candidates who have so far declared their intent to run.

The confirmation that the Daniels’ marriage is the last hurdle in front of a bid for the White House highlights the delicate situation in which the Governor finds himself. In 1993, Cheri Daniels left her husband with their four daughters and married another man in California. She returned a few years later, reconciled with Daniels, and the two were remarried in 1997. That is, in a nutshell, the story. The national press first picked up on it last year when it was buried at the bottom of an 8,600-word Weekly Standard profile.

There are good, legitimate reasons to oppose Mitch Daniels for the Presidency. This isn't one of them, and is no more relevant than Bill and Hillary's troubles were.

1. Actually, that sounds like the plot of a 4-hankie rom-com starring Brad Pitt . . .
and Reese Witherspoon. I have nothing against rom-coms.

But yeah, there are plenty of other reasons for Daniels not to be president.

2. Watch Daniels. He definitely wants to be Prez.
He's not a clown, so we need to take him quite seriously.

3. I was out to dinner with my sister and Mom on Mother's Day. In the
course of conversation, my sister (wife to IN senator) alluded to the 'fact' that the legislature just didn't have time for......
The 'for' being something the PEOPLE need and for the life of me now I can't remember. DRATS! But the point is, Daniel's henchmen in the legislature did have time to block Federal funding to Planned Parenthood, enact a school voucher system, re-district and attack unions. Daniels is dangerous IMHO.

BTW, I brought the above matters up and said that the legislature did have time....they just have different priorities. The comment received a dismissive wave of a hand. :grr:

5. "Mitch Daniels open to VAT, oil tax hike"
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels opened the door Thursday to supporting both a value added tax and a tariff on imported oil, bold proposals that could cause trouble for him with conservatives as he flirts with a long-shot bid for the presidency.

6. While I would not vote for him for a whole lot of reasons
not the least of which is the "R" after his name, his marital history is not one of them. It is between Gov. Daniels and his wife and none of my business.

9. As A Former Resident Of Indiana Under Gov Daniels I Can Say He Is Not Strong On the Economic Issues
While extremely popular among independents and Republicans in Indiana most including Republicans would agree that Governor Daniels has presided over the destruction and collapse of the economy in the state of Indiana. With the economy likely being the number 1 issue in 2012 I dont think Daniels stands a chance against the President of convincing Americans that he is better on job creation or any economic issue for that matter.

I agree that he is not electable but he is somebody that should be taken seriously with his popularity among Independents and Republicans and for his extreme right wing views on most issues...

10. I don't understand why this would be an issue at all
They split up and got back together. His wife can cry about rediscovering Jesus, her faith and renewing her commitment to the marriage sacrament. The Christian conservatives will eat it up. He'd probably fare better than most of the other potential GOP nominees but he'd still lose. He'd be better of waiting for '16.

11. Reality check: he's too short compared to Obama's 6'-2".
and Obama is better looking, athletic and thin.

Should be irrelevant, but it's not. Ask Mike Dukakis.
