Memphis Business JournalMemphis' Booker T. Washington High School has won a contest to host President Barack Obama as its commencement speaker.
Booker T. Washington was one of three nationwide finalists in the Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge, which was created as part of Obama’s goal for the U.S. to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.
The school's graduation rate rose from 55 percent in 2007 to 81.6 percent in 2010.
“Booker T. Washington High School proves what can be accomplished when students, teachers, parents and administrators come together to support achievement in the classroom and I’m looking forward to delivering the commencement address at this extraordinary school soon,” Obama said in a statement.
