GM's Akerson reveals hiring blitz(4,000 jobs)
Source: Detroit Free Press

TOLEDO -- General Motors plans to add or preserve more than 4,000 jobs in eight states, CEO Dan Akerson said today, as the automaker bets on gaining market share while the Japanese earthquake and high gas prices shake up the auto industry.

GM’s six-speed transmission factory in Toledo is one of the 17 plants in GM’s planned hiring blitz. In Toledo, GM will spend $204 million on updates to retain or create jobs for about 250 workers that will build new eight-speed automatic transmissions, Akerson said. The automaker intends in the coming months to share the names of other factories who are receiving a collective $2 billion in retooling and updates -- dependent on approval of local tax incentives.

“These investments are key to our growth,” Akerson said. “We need to stay true to our mission: that is, to design, build and sell the world’s best vehicles.”

The Free Press first reported the upcoming hiring blitz, which includes last week’s announcement of 250 new jobs building Corvettes in Bowling Green, Ky. In addition, the Warren Tech Center and powertrain plants such as those in Spring Hill, Tenn., and Tonawanda, N.Y., are targeted for new or preserved jobs, people familiar with the matter told the Free Press. GM also plans to add hundreds of new jobs at its Detroit-Hamtramck Chevrolet Volt plant, and is considering adding up to 2,000 positions, the Free Press has reported.

2. General Motors Creates, Retains 4,000 Jobs by Investing $2 Billion in Plant Expansions and Upgrades
Source: ABC News

May 10, 2011

General Motors today announced a $2 billion expansion of its domestic auto making operations, which will result in the creation or retention of 4,000 jobs spread across 17 facilities in eight states.

GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson revealed the plans at a transmission plant in Toledo, Ohio. He was not specific about where the new jobs would be added, but local union officials say the Toledo site would add 250 to 400 workers.

Most of the 4,000 jobs -- as many as 3,000 -- will be new hires while the rest will be the preservation of workers who faced layoffs, a company spokesman said.

"We are doing this because we are confident about demand for our vehicles and the economy," Akerson said in a statement. "This new investment is on top of $3.4 billion and more than 9,000 jobs that GM has added or saved since mid-2009."

10. If they invest it, then they will most certainly take it as a tax break.

'Twould be insane otherwise.

That, in fact, is what makes the entire, "if you raise taxes, they won't be able to afford new investment," argument the single, stupidest argument on economic policy ever. You don't PAY TAXES on investments. You only pay taxes on profit.

Q. What is a one word name for a tax break?
A. Investment!

Higher taxes actually encourages more investment. Taken to its absurdity just to make a point, if we taxed income over $10M at 100%, everybody making over $10M would reinvest every penny over $10M to put that money to work for themselves rather than surrender all of it to the government.

them having to invest it. That's what I meant. Just free money. For the wealthy. Not trickling down to labor. Not here or over there.

I think investing in the U.S. is COOL.

12. Correct and thank you. Reagan taxcutting from 70% to 35% is
what has kept the economy in low gear ever since.

7. This Michigander thanks you for your GM purchase. Granted things here are not great but
I can't even imagine what life would be like in and around Michigan if GM and Chrysler were allow to fold.

5. $500K per job
That is not a bad price, IF the jobs are good paying, say something $40K + and the jobs exist for the longterm. Obama deserves a lot of credit for bailing out GM and getting GM to reinvest in the US. Yes, and I am an avowed Obama basher.

6. Fantastic!
Another win to shove in the face of Republicans here in Michigan.

I ALWAYS need to remind them that Bush WOULDN'T EVEN TAKE A MEETING
with the auto manufacturers.

I hope Snyder doesn't reap any benefits from this.

13. Who would have thought that investing in America would pay off?
:sarcasm:

The ultra wealthy could learn a few things from this example. I'll just hold my breath.
