Senate passes Snyder's tax reform package
Source: Detroit News

Lansing—Gov. Rick Snyder's massive tax reform package has passed in the Senate, where Democrats had unsuccessfully proposed 15 amendments to soften its effects.

The main bill in the package passed 20-19, with Lt. Gov. Brian Calley casting the tie-breaking vote. Remaining bills are still being voted on.

The tax reform bill decided by Calley eliminates the Michigan Business Tax and replaces it with a flat 6 percent corporate tax to be paid only by companies with shareholders, resulting in a nearly $2 billion tax break for Michigan businesses. The bill assesses a new tax on pensions and eliminates most individual tax credits, including the child exemption. The earned income tax credit for the working poor will be cut by more than half.

The House is expected to vote on, and pass, the Senate's version of the legislation later this afternoon. The legislation will then head to Snyder's desk for him to sign into law. . .

Swell. Still waiting for those "shared sacrifice" proposals from the GOP; this one exacts sacrifices, all right, from seniors, the poor and the middle class. As usual.

4. By Putting Their People In Charge of all the Democratic Strongholds
The state is taking over Detroit and eventually all the other Democratic-leaning cities.
That way they can control the entire voting process and ensure a Republican victory
no matter how the people actually vote (or try to).

Sorry, there's only one voting machine for the entire precinct, and it's down now.
Come back in a few hours and wait in line again.

14. What's a Dem registration?
I don't see anything on my voter registration that specifies a party. It's been a few decades since I registered, so maybe that detail slipped my mind.

:hi:

13. For one thing, he splits the Senior vote
The tax on retirement income only applies to some retirees. Pre-boomers, whatever they're called, will not be subject to the tax. I think some or all pensions from the public sector are also exempt. This divide-and-conquer technique may help him survive any recall attempt.

11. I live in Michigan
And even I don't get it. It boggles the mind that people would vote to inflict this on themselves.

I have to wonder how many poor folks, teachers and union members actually voted republican and what they were thinking when they did.

It definitely boggles MY mind.

was probably people not voting at all. There were 560,000 fewer votes cast in 2010 than in 2006. The Dems stayed home.
