Police say Bragg soldier responsible in Jeffrey Drive shooting

By James Halpin
Staff writer

A Fort Bragg soldier who had deployed to war zones three times in his career shot and killed his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself, Fayetteville police said Friday.

Sgt. Michael Lloyd Williams, 46, is believed to be responsible for killing his girlfriend in an apartment building off Reilly Road, police spokesman Gavin MacRoberts said. The pair was found in their Summertime Apartments unit Thursday morning.

"It appears that Williams is responsible for shooting Stephanie Thompson multiple times before shooting himself," MacRoberts said.

Police did not release further details on the case, citing the ongoing investigation. Williams shot himself in the head but failed to kill himself, according to police. He remained listed in critical but stable condition Friday afternoon at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

looking it up, yes, it was.

and then I found this article:

Abuse and Murder of Military Wives

NewHampster - Posted on 29 January 2009

Katie Couric over at CBS has been reporting on the abuse of wives by their husbands returning from Iraq. The numbers are high, way too high. And is the military doing anything to help? Probably not but I have to assume that under a Democratic administration things will get better, I hope.

I apologize for the ad but have to give CBS credit for figuring how to make a buck off the web.

The Hidden Casualties Of War
CBS Evening News Investigates Staggering Domestic Violence Numbers When U.S. Soldiers Return From Iraq, Afghanistan

NEW YORK, Jan. 28, 2009 | by Katie Couric

(CBS) The Army is cracking down on sexual abuse in the ranks. One-third of service-women and 6 percent of servicemen say they've been victims. This week, the army said it will hire more prosecutors to bring perpetrators to justice. Meanwhile, critics say the military needs to do more about another crime women, being assaulted, beaten, even raped by their military husbands or boyfriends. A CBS News investigation finds more than 25,000 spouses and domestic partners have been attacked over the past decade. Nearly 90 spouses have died. The numbers are growing.

3. Yes.
Home of U.S. Army Airborne and Special Forces, as well as JSOC, famous recently for killing Osama bin Laden.

It is a "base," but technically a fort and just FYI, generally referred to as a post.

4. Obviously a sad story...
If he wanted to kill himself, he should have simply started with himself. I see no need to kill the girl....... Sad story.

5. Oh, I'm quite sure she did something to DESERVE it!
I just wanted to pre-parrot the first a$$hole to post something similar in this thread.

In the 20 years that I have left active duty, it seems that the military has not made any strides in successfully dealing with men who "batter". But then again, neither has civilian law enforcement.

7. Often times, things like this are swept under the rug...
It's unfortunate. Both the girl and the boy could have been spared. Just a sad, sad story.

6. If I'm not mistaken
the NRA is pushing legislation to allow these soldiers war trophies, i.e. weapons.

8. Yeah, because...
If it's one thing that someone needs after leaving countless war zones, it's guns to remind them of those visits.

10. I hope so...
Not that I would want to shoot the cheap pakistani AKs I saw, but still would be neat to be able to keep one.

11. Glad the kids are safe

I am glad the kids were out of state visiting Grand ma when this happened. I just moved in to these apartments a week ago and my apartment mates tell me a returning soldier killed him self here (Summertime Apartmeents) several months ago.

It is sad when some one kills themself over a relationship gone wrong, but it is a thousand times worst to kill others.
