India, Pakistan exchange border fire
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged sustained cross-border fire on Sunday, security officials said, a day after an Indian soldier was killed by Pakistani troops while patrolling one of the world's most heavily guarded borders.

The two sides exchanged small arms fire for 30 minutes early on Sunday at a border post 30 km (18 miles) from Jammu, the winter capital of the disputed Kashmir region in north India.

"Pakistani soldiers opened unprovoked firing on our Umra Wali post," said a spokesman for the paramilitary Indian Border Security Force. "We responded to their fire effectively."

1. EXACTLY WHAT WE DON'T NEED!!
Pakistan is already way too obsessive over India as it is...Hopefully this does not escalate.

5. It was bound to happen. The animosity
between India and Pakistan has been simmering for years and years. I suppose it was too much to expect it to remain on the low burner.

6. Right...However, the ODD thing is India is not...
solely focused on Pakistan & hopes of one day conquering them like Pakistan is about India. India is more focused on the future & participating in the global economy. Or at least that is the way it appears to me.

7. India has advanced much quicker
than anyone expected. (Or at least that is how I feel.) Pakistan seems to be still in the age of The Raj.

8. I agree
yet "WE" supplied Pakistan with nuclear weapons...they, in turn, shared the knowledge with "terrorists."

It is so sickening that propaganda has caused America to have "Alzheimer's."

"I have loved ones with actual Alzheimer's and in no way am I purposely degrading them, the REAL Alzheimer's is devastating to a family.)

14. We shouldn't supply Pakistan
with anything -- not even paper clips.

How can we supply a military ruled/controlled, Islamic fundamentalist terrorist state against a secular, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic democracy? How did we sleep at night while supplying this terrorist nation all along which takes our secrets and feeds them to China?

15. Bull shit, Pakistan developed the bomb in response to India's nuclear weapon's program.
Show me the link that proves the West "supplied" any nuclear secrets willingly to Pakistan. India's upper caste is doing great but any county with over 400,000,000 illiterate citizens in their underclass is for the most part a Potemkin village deception.

under Munir Ahmad Khan, had finished and completed the work on the fission weapon.<20>

In 1974, in response to India's Smiling Buddha nuclear test, Prime Minister Bhutto announced:

“ If India builds the bomb, we will eat grass and leaves for a thousand years, even go hungry, but we will get one of our own. The Christians have the bomb, the Jews have the bomb and now the Hindus have the bomb. Why not the Muslims too have the bomb?<23><24> ”

3. But pro-nukes assured us that nuclear deterrence would prevent this!
Just like they said Fukushima couldn't happen.
They said EVERY country should have nuclear weapons because it would bring peace around the world!
They were wrong ...

13. +1000
Pakistan always does this when it is caught with its hands in a cookie jar and the military is losing morale.

11. This is why the calls for revenge against Pakistan are misplaced
It has long been obvious that even a low intenstify conflict here increases the probability of full scale war and it is likely India would gain the upper hand, either causing China to consider entering the war and/or sparking a nuclear conflict. This is why it is prudent to tread carefully in Pakistan. We got bin Laden and now we should be addressing Pakistan's concerns about drones, not chastising them for their support of groups the US helped create and has known about for decades.

12. China will not get involved directly
in a war between Pakistan and India. It never has even when Pakistan's ass was kicked and it was dismembered in 1971.

China will posture and make UNSC moves, start moving troops to the border but will not fire a shot.

16. China and India fought a war in 1962
That border dispute has never been resolved.

It is not 1962 and it is not 1971.

It is now 2011. They are now competitors for the hegemon of the 21st Century, as the US recedes. Conflict over Pakistan could very well be the spark.

That said, I hope you right.

18. India of 1962 is not the same as India of 2011
India has strategically modified its forces to fight China rather than Pakistan. Pakistan is just a little insect begging to be crushed.

19. I'm not so sure
Pakistan has medium range nuclear weaponry. It can easily strike Delhi and Mumbai. It has at least 50 warheads on missiles strategically diverse.

20. That was hateful...
Insect to be crushed? Classic dehumanization phrase notoriously used during the Nazi regime.
