Two Other Reactors Suffer Serious Damage (Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex)
Source: WSJ

TOKYO—Substantial damage to the fuel cores at two other reactors of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex has taken place, operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Sunday, further complicating the already daunting task of bringing the reactors to a safe shutdown while avoiding the release of high levels of radioactivity.

The revelation followed an acknowledgement on Thursday that a similar meltdown of the core took place at Unit No. 1. The operator, known as Tepco, said that unit lost its reactor core 16 hours after the plant was struck by a magnitude-9 earthquake and a giant tsunami on the afternoon of March 11.

If a nuclear plant melts down and the American press quits talking about it is it still happening?

There was a video posted with a Frenchman living in Tokyo who basically talked about the situation exactly as this article describes it. I kept asking "who is this guy?" I really don't know that but apparently his description of what is happening is fairly accurate.

3. I for one have said from the beginning when Tepco says "may be, could be, possibly" that means that
it is.

There are a few of us on here who assumed the other reactors had melted down as well when we heard of the first one.

We need to be closing our nuclear plants like Germany and other countries are planning to do.

Fukushima should be a very useful motivator to turn away from dangerous monopolized energy to safer decentralized solar, wind and other technologies.

They are so expensive. They are so expensive. That's been the cry of the fossil fuel and coal and nuclear industry profiteers since the 70's.

What is more expensive than nuclear meltdowns in multiple reactors?

It is so destructive of us to continue with nuclear power when the taxpayers are set up to carry the great costs of their inevitable accidents and long term pollution. There is a reason they are not insurable and the private sector does not wish to invest in them.

My Democrats should be seizing upon this iconic accident to curb nuclear power and push for much bigger green infrastructure repairing to make these catastrophic risks unnecessary.

Other countries have ramped up their renewable energy targets-- great increases by 2020 already. We do not want to continue letting them dominate world markets in renewables. Their governments see those projects as part of strengthening their national security over the long term-- we should too.

5. I wish Gunderson would
talk about the radiation in the atmosphere and show where it is moving.

I guess he is just focusing on Japan.

Think of all the fish and ocean life that is going to be destroyed.

It's more than one can comprehend, really. This radiation soup will never end.

7. No amount of cover-up will stop the disaster.
The American press always enables Japan, whether it be their corrupt and inept government, or the slaughter of one of the most sentient beings on earth, comparable in brain composition to humans, i.e. whales and dolphins.

10. 1k
And a fifty million year old survival record, another criteria for intelligence. I doubt that humans will survive if the oceans become too toxic for our neurological cousins.

8. Where are the
pro-nukers (DUers & other) these days? Not hearing much from them.

And I kind of wish we were...because it indicted maybe things weren't so bad if they could still put out the positive spin--but I think things are so bad even they might have given up.

Is anybody seeing any pro-Nuke damage control out there? Or is it just *crickets* now?

9. I wish they were to start making up for the damage they did.
I don't want to see them eat crow. I want them to make amends by admitting the wrong they helped in.

How many were only here for that, we may wonder.
